As long as you are aware of the Timewarp there is no problem with the newer old board,as long as you are not on the new one.
But when you are lost in the timewarp then you won't know where you are.

If you are going to do chat, you should use something like IRC. There are clients for everything in existance, it's a lightweight no-nonsense protocol, and you can easily run 100,000 user networks from mediocre servers.
