Last year about this time I was reading some post on another board about the Eagle Rays coming through at this time of the year. Am I mistaken or is this the time? If it is, where is the best place to see them? I was hoping to see some this year as I am going to be down there earlier this year than last year. Thanks for any imput to this thread.

I just got back last night and we saw some during the dives. If you want to see them in abundance dive San Juan reef in the north part of the island.

you can see them there all year long..but between Nov and March you will see more of them. Rooster1 is correct we went to San Juan reef last Christmas and there were about 13 of them just riding the current. We went in June and only saw one one the whole trip.

SAw a nice one two weeks ago... :) not even diving, just snorkeling with the family. :)

For whatever reason nobody is seeing large groups of rays up north this year. it maybe that they have been scared away since there were too many divers diving that one site a year ago.

The legend (Isidro) is no more :frown: At least not running or diving Sea Urchin anymore. The rumours are true he sold the business months ago. He is currently still on the Island. He has set up a villa now or two for rent. He also has an Interest in work in Costa Rica, but that is just that now...just interest. The new owner Jorge is a real nice guy. He is an American from Chicago who bought the business. He is very accommodating. Poncho is still with the business and is excellent to dive with and runs a great dive boat and also accommodates the divers. I unfortunately went as a lone diver this year so had to take whatever came on the dive boat. There were divers who were unexperience that Poncho took care of when we dove and after he sent them up when they were getting low on air we still continued to do our dive. If you are travelling with other divers that are experienced, Jorge and Poncho will let you dive where you want. That means the good stuff to the north and the good stuff to the far south. If you have a mixed bag, then they have to think of the comfort and safety of the less experienced divers. i:e if you have new divers on the boat, you won't be diving Isolette or Maracaibo, San Juan, or Barracuda reefs. Jorge and Poncho are good to deal with and I would dive with them again no problem. Next time I hope to go with a full boat load, so we can do the thrill dives and poncho can be at ease cuz he knows the divers

I dont dive in the winter because you get much better vis in the summer and the water is a lot calmer as well. But, I did see several White Spotted Eagle Rays last August. I was diving with Careyitos and we were on Palancar Bricks when we ran into 4 or 5 of them spread out over the reef. The better Dive Operators know where they are most of the time. Send me your Email address and I'll send you some pic.s' if you like. Have a nice trip.
