I currently dive a Aqualung malibu RDS BC looking to switch into a backplate wing combo. Been doing some bargain hunting. Lowest price I can find on a new Halcyon pioneer 36lb system (with MC storage) is $449 shipped (no tax) from a guy on ebay. Is that a good price? I can also get a Dive Rite full setup with any DR wing I want for $329. What is a better setup? Is it worth it to pay more for the halcyon setup? i have been leaning towards Halcyon because my dive instructors at UC Berkeley both have this setup and say they have had the same gear for years with no problems.

Thanks

They are both good. The prices are OK I guess it depends on the number of dives they systems have on them.

If both were new or newish and the dive rite already had the shorter hose and the pull dump removed, and the Halcyon came w/ a SS inflator then I guess it would be a toss up.

The Halcyon setup is used and I think I know where you found that price for $329. To be honest unless you want to pay more for the "H" then they are really both the same. I dive a Halcyon setup and love it but I also dove a Dive Rite for a while and I had no problems with that either. I would save the money and I am also probably going to buy that $329 setup from the same people you are for my girlfriend. Its a personal decision but from having dove with both of them I will tell you with all honesty that I didn't notice any difference.

Actually, both of the set ups are new. What about the eclipse? Is it worth paying $500 more for the eclipse setup? I hear they are just more durable than the pioneer because they do not puncture as easily due to the double layering.

The $329 DR employs "double layering" too.

Where are you getting a DR single tank setup for $329?

Famous name harness and backplate Combo. We buy bulk to save you BIG money. This price is so low that the Manufacturer won’t let us use their name if we print the price here.

Here’s what you get:

Stanless steel (6lb.) or Aluminum Backplate
Your Choice of harness:
One piece Horgarthian harness
Deluxe harness with chest strap
Your Choice of wing:
Doubles Wing with 59 pounds of lift
Single/Double wing with 51 pounds of lift
Single Wing with 40 pounds of lift
"O" style Singles Wing with 30 pounds of lift

Notice you don't get a single tank adapter or cam bands with that.

Your price for a whole system will be much more like $400+ than $330.

I think we've done this before. You don't need a single tank adaptor. It's not my price.
