Hi,
Just curious if you can use this setup with nitrox without doing anything - in other words having to get different seals or whatever that are O2 safe.

Thanks,

Darryl

Check the Apeks website - you should find that these regulators are rated to EAN40 as they leave the factory. Apeks have a specific line of TX40/TX50 regulators that are EAN100 compatable, but it would be cheaper to get your own regs O2 cleaned than pay for these.

They also make a rather cool first stage called the DS1, which is EAN100 ok'd, with only 1 high pressure and 1 low pressure port, perfect for deco bottles. Unfortunately it's not distributed in the US, and I've only found one out-of-date pricelist for ordering it over the web.

I've looked before, but I never found it. Its under nitrox, rather than specific regs. Anyways, the following is quoted from they're website . . .

" As they leave the factory standard Apeks regulators are suitable for use with
oxygen enriched gases ( i.e. Nitrox etc.) providing the oxygen content does NOT
EXCEED 40%.

For mixtures containing more than 40% Apeks Nitrox regulators are specially
made and assembled at our factory and are suitable for 100% oxygen use.

Standard Apeks regulators can be professionally converted to oxygen service and
oxygen compatibility kits are available to Apeks dealers together with instructions
for O2 use."

Only one shop in my area will O2 clean Apeks regs. Plenty of other Apeks dealers arouind, just none of them do O2 cleaning.

(that is cleaning for 100% oxygen)

O2 cleaning is largely hype. Any reg, right off the shelf, is most certainly fine for 40%. Perhaps even 50%.

If you're going to use it with 100% O2, you can get it O2 cleaned very cheaply -- or do it yourself. O2 cleaning involves the following:

1) Disassembling everything and cleaning thoroughly, under a magnifier, with a suitable degreaser like Simple Green and suitable lintless cloths like microfiber.
2) Replacing normal greases and lubricants with O2-compatible lubricants like Crysto-Lube.
3) Replacing rubber O-rings with O2-compatible O-rings made of Viton or Nitrile.

Unless your local LDS has a clean-room, they're only going to oxygen clean your reg to a specification recognized as any sort of "clean" only to the diving industry. As soon as you throw the reg in the dive bag or put the reg on a tank that's had it valve touched by human hands, your reg is no longer oxygen clean.

Many people make too big a deal about oxygen cleanliness mainly because they realize there's money to be made. In reality, no one really has clean regs, and it doesn't really matter, anyway.

IMO, all that's necessary is that you follow those three steps (only takes a half-hour) -- then you can use your reg for any mix you'd like. I'm sure this is going to get flames -- but before you flame, please consider including some references that specifically indicate what's wrong with what I've said, on a practical level.

If the kit is only available to dealers how i am going to get the parts i need. The scuba shop wont sell me the kit, how do i o2 clean my own regs without the kit?

Andy

trymix,

Tools are readily available. Simple Green is readily available. Microfiber cloths are readily available. I believe you can buy Viton O-rings and Crysto-Lube from just about any good fluid or gas products vendor... try McMaster-Carr. If they don't sell them, they should know who does.
