... upon reflection...

(Humor mode = on)

"NOPE... no'sir... not a bit... nyet... nadda'.. NO... SCUBA ain't a sport... its dead serious and it'll kill ya'... heck, even thinking about it without a snorkel, spare air and an instructor can do serious damage. Why in the world would ANYBODY willingly or voluntarily see how long they can try to breath underwater... AND TO THINK THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE THE AUDACITY TO CALL THIS *FUN*... whattcha'll thinkin!!! There's SHARKIES and NIBBLY-THINGIES DOWN THERE... AND WATER... LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER!!!! "Sport"... not hardly... "Fun"... only if you think schleping a bunch of weight around while dressed in some fetish underwear is FUN!!! GOOD GREIFF, CHARLIE BROWN... this is hard core... ummm... something or other... but it darned well CAN'T BE SPORT!!!!"

Whew... I think I'll go have a cold beer and finish rinsing out my BC...

We don't really care, cranky parrot. It's something to do to pass the workday.

Besides, I'm under orders by a certain mod to "Go stir up trouble." :D

It's not a parrot, Darlin'. Are you a Heinlein fan?

Yes, a Heinlein fan from way back. Not a parrot? What kind of bird are you?

Wait a minute...

I think I see the catch in the OP's original question...

Ummm... "Is Scuba *a* sport?"

Well now... I missed the *a*... OF COURSE Scuba is *sport* (as in 'entertaing activity') but *a* sport??? Well... the answer there is...

... ummm....

... depends.

halemano:
My dogeared Random House Dictionary (13th printing '91) defines sport as;

1. An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.

The rest of the definitions do not apply, but none of them say anything about recreational hobby, diversion or pastime.
Care to quote the rest?

Though even by that single definition, I'd say the athletic activity that is diving (which certainly requires skill), would meet your dictionary's definition of sport.

So, your evidence seems to contradict your point...

J.R.:
Let's see:

Diving is an activity that can be considered:

Sport
Work
Therapy
Adventure
Nightmare
Something to relieve boredom
an 'Enterprise'
a 'Challeng'
a Social Environment
a Status Symbol
a source for never ending conversation about minutia and trivia
a research medium
Education
transportation
etc.
etc.
. . . snip . . .

an Addiction
an Obsession
a Habit
a compulsion
a craving
A FIX

oh....god! I have GOT to get back in the water soon!!
