I like to drink warm liquids before and between dives, and I am indeed a coffee hound, but I want to avoid diuretics. Hot chocolate is okay, but not really my thing.

thanks, don

I mix hot decaf green tea with pure maple syrup for sweetening and energy in a thermos. Since the caffeine has been removed, it is not a diuretic. Keeps me warm between dives. Helps flush the cookies and french rolls down too.

No, it is not. Caffeine is the ingredient in coffee that causes very mild diuresis. BTW, most chocolate also contains caffeine, although the amount is trivial.

Best regards.

Coffee is a "mild" diuretic? Okay, well - I've been advised to avoid coffee :java: & tea.

From the link Cyclon furnished:

Coffee, Drip 115-175
Coffee, Brewed 80-135
Coffee, Espresso (2 ounces) 100
Coffee, Instant 65-100
Tea, iced 47
Tea, brewed, imported brands (avg.) 60
Tea, brewed, U.S. brands (avg.) 40
Tea, instant 30
Tea, green 15
Hot cocoa 14
Coffee, Decaf, brewed 3-4
Coffee, Decaf, instant 2-3

So, Cocoa is about 10% as strong as Coffee, and DeCaf is around 3%. (We can believe things like this on the net, right?) So, okay - Decaf, it is! Thanks.

(I realize that some of the questions I ask seem silly, even though serious at this end. This was better than the Gourd Root question anyway - which again, was serious on this end. :54: )

Thanks, don

another side effect of chocolate, coffe, tea and also tobacco is eosophagic reflux, wich is potentiated by the horizontal possition, and can be very annoying for some divers.

We are of course now well off the topic of diuretic effects, but your list could also include alcohol, mint, fatty foods & other ingestibles.

Best regards.

Heard that! I've long had a hietal hernia that makes me prone to these anyway. (I suspect that everyone who was ever been obese has one.) I never board a dive boat without antacids, and always use them before the first dive.

thanks, don
