Is Cancun dead for diving?

We got some cheap coupons for an all inclusive in Cancun, are there decent dive sites about Cancun? do we have to take the ferry to Coz if we want to dive? I suppose we could drive south to playa also. Suggestions, recommendations?

There is decent diving in Cancun. About a year or so ago, some friends and I dove with Mayan Aqua Dive. Good operation, we did ocean dives and Cenote dives. Only snag we hit was with a trip to Cozumel, booked through a third party and the operation in Cozumel was iffy (no names on anything so I can't even tell you who it was). The death of diving in Cancun is GREATLY exaggerated!!! There are plenty of good reefs and fish. Is it Coz? No. It's an apple to oranges comparision.

If Ben is no longer running Mayan Aqua Dive, I can't really recommend it anymore. Different management typically means its a different operation.

I went to Cancun 3 times last year to dive. I'll be going back again in November. I think Cancun has some great sites. There is a lot of marine life around there. We saw eels, nurse sharks, baracuda, and schools of other fish. We even did a wreck dive. I think Cancun is great because there is so much to do in and out of the water. And if you want to take a day trip to Coz (we did and loved it) or playa, you can do that too.

I also dive with Ben and Jorge. They're great. I wouldn't dive with anyone else. I kind of wish I could stick them in my bags and fly them out to South Africa with me this summer. I'm a little nervous to dive with someone else.

I went to scuba cancun on my trip to Cancun over US Thanksgiving. They were a smaller shop and did a nice job. Did a 2 tank dive. Good pricing and friendly crew.

Is it as good as Cozumel? No
Would I dive in Cancun again, Yes

I have dove and will be diving in March. There is plenty of great dive sites in the area. I have seen turtles, Eels, Sharks, and a great number of fish on my dives. It is by no means a dead area.

I have seen more fish, etc., at Cancun, than Cozumel. Cancun doesn't offer the walls, but good diving especially for beginner to intermediate.
