I am getting ready to redo my webbing on my OMS SS back plate. I dont dive with a scooter. Just what is the advantage of a crotch strap ?

TMD

I dove it without one, but i am thinking of adding one.

I use one (2" webbing) and like it. It allows you to have the shoulder straps a little bit looser than if you did not use a crotch strap. Plus, you have the Butt D-ring for a spare spool or lift t bag. On the subject of lift bags, I keep it on the bottom of my BP with 2 pieces of surgical tubing. I made (have not dove it yet) a leash out of shock cord that is about the same lenght as my crotch strap. I clip one end to the lift bag and the other to my scooter ring. That way, when I go for the bag with thick gloves I can pull it free and know I will not lose it. Will see how it works this season. :)

I use one on my Transpac and I don't scooter. I think it's likely overkill, but I'm more comfortable with it.

I am going to re web it tomorrow, i havent used a crotch strap before and it sounds like its just an option. I had a quick disconnect in my other harness, but after some reading i see this is just another failure point. And well hell working on gear is just too much fun, so i thought may as well redo it. I aslo can add the crotch strap later if i want to try it.

I only use a crotch strap when scootering. My best friend, female, clips her jon line off to a D-ring and enjoys it.
Aside from that, a harness doesn't move around very much.

Ok here it goes!
If you setup a wing with a backplate and harness with a crotch strap. And use a regular weight belt. You put the weight belt on then the wing when you attach the crotch strap dosn't it go over the weight belt? Now if you drop your weight belt wont it get caught on the crotch strap? I know its dumb but had to ask!!

Not a dumb question at all.
Put the weight belt on after you put on the crotch strap. It's a little awkward, but the weight belt must be outside everything else.

I always put the belt under the crotch strap. This ensures that if the belt were to come off accidentally, the crotch strap would catch it. I had this happen to me once while hanging on a bouncing mooring line. The line cought my belt buckle, and the belt came off. The crotch strap caught like it was supposed to. Since then, I added another buckle to my weight belt. To ditch it, I would have to unbuckle my waste strap and then unbuckle two buckles on the weight belt. The last thing you want is to lose your belt accidentally. You want to be very deliberate if you have to ditch your belt, IMO.

Take care.
