Hello,

This question was addressed in the UHMS guidelines for rescuing a non-responsive diver from depth. I have attached the paper here. I have also attached a report of a technical diver who made an unescorted unconscious buoyant emergency ascent (and survived) because it was impossibly dangerous for buddies to take him to the surface.

I'm not a tech diver, so I'm not in the best position to judge the risks of blowing off deco. But I have sometimes thought about the availability of hyperbaric chambers when making decisions about risk tolerance within what's generally considered acceptable. I'm fortunate to live and dive near some excellent facilities, so I'm comfortable with certain longish, deepish (but within NDL) dives that I might not be as comfortable doing, say, off a remote island in the South Pacific. I do carry the highest level of DAN insurance.
