I'm not sure if this is the correct section to put this in, but none of the others seemed to fit either. I'm sure someone will move it if needed. On to the story....
My wife and I chartered a catamaran in the BVIs last year along with 3 other couples. We were the only divers on the boat, but the others agreed to accomodate us for a few hours a couple of the days. We grabbed a mooring bouy over the RMS Rhone and proceeded to do the first of two dives. Twenty minutes into the first dive, my rented computer just stopped working, so we called the dive and went back up to see what was wrong with it. (will never rent computers again, but that's a different story)
Anyway, while we are on the boat, another cat with three couples pulled up and grabbed a bouy. Three guys and one woman kit up and jump in while the other two girls begin sun bathing. Being new divers ourselves, out of curiosity, we were watching them gear up, and they seemed to be experienced divers - very comfortable with the equipment. Well, they were down for about 40 minutes or so when one of the male divers surfaced by himself. Thinking this was kind of out of the ordinary, they really had my attention now. I heard him yell something at the two girls left on the boat, but couldn't make out what because of the distance and wind. To my astonishment, one of the girls jumped up, put on a mask and fins, hopped in the water, grabbed the guy's octo, he deflated and down they went. And it happened just about as fast as it took to read my last sentence. My wife and I just looked at each other dumbfounded. They were down about 15 minutes or so and the whole group came up together. Nobody seemed the worse for wear.
IIRC, the boats were moored in about 30', so I am assuming that is the minimum depth that the duo went. While they appeared to have been experienced divers, and probably had done this exact procedure before, I'm not sure how safe it was. I know I would probably never do it myself.
