I've always heard insturctors don't make money. In fact, they are lucky to break even. I'm looking for a place to do my IDC. I contacted AquaWorld in Cancun. They had this on the attachment they sent me.....

We have some of the highest paid instructors in the world in Mexico: $2000-$4000 USD per month average, some make even more.

Does anyone know if this is ture? I mean for the average instructor? I'm a teacher and would deffinately say I'm not rich, but this is the same range as what I get paid. I'm sure a scuba instructor would be more fun than teaching school. Anyone have more information on this?

I don't know what they make in Mexico, I'm just going to venture a wild guess and figure that money would include working as a DM on the boat or as a shop employee when not teaching. If it is for teaching only, pm me. I can learn a 2nd language. As for making that kind of money in the states? In some locations maybe but I can't think of any.

Here's a little more of the article. It's just for teaching. Can anyone confirm this?

Can I get a job in Mexico?
Sure you can, in fact a large proportion of our instructor graduates are snapped up by Aquaworlds own operation. Others find work in the many other dive operations in the region.
What about immigration?
Your employer will help you get a work permit, it takes a couple of weeks, but be patient, you need to wait two weeks for your teaching status anyway.
How much money will I make?

$2000 a month is only $500 a week... Is that possible... sure.

Here is what it will involve

1. Working about 91 hours per week (7AM - 8PM - 7 days a week) about $5.50 HR
2. Teaching classes day and night when not on the boat
3. Crewing on the boats
4. Entertaining guests
5. Scrubbing and cleaning the boats and head
6. Being responsible for lots of divers in the water (stress)
7. Absolutely no time for yourself

If that sounds worth it... off you go!

It's much easier to earn that here in the states... and only work 3 days a week. How you might ask? Teach private scuba lessons. I charge up to $600 per student. A family of three is $1800 and I'm done in two weeks... Thats $900 a week working about 18 hours a week X two weeks (3 - 6 HR Days per week.) Find a niche and exploit it.

$600 for an OW card? Wow! That's a lot. I only paid $220 for mine. Where are you? With the competition around here, it wouldn't be possible for me.

How old is the info from Aquaworld? A poster on this board "Cancun Mark" was a course director for them at one time and think , due to "Wilma" has left.

As a CD he made very good money until a year ago when they cut his pay down to something like $12,000 a year.

Good luck, regardless of the info on getting a working visa in Mexico as strictly a dive instructor.

Trust me,I have read into this.

Cost of Open Water Cert up here from one local shop is $850.00 and includes your check out dives.

WOW!!! $850? $600? That's amazing! Is everyone in yalls area that much? How many people do you certify in a year? With that amount it doesn't seem like you would have to do many to make money.

So Ron..... how would you stay in Mexico to be an instructor? I didn't think it was that hard to move down there, but I haven't checked into it and could deffinately be wrong.....
