I'm looking at an Inon D-2000 to use with my WP-DC40 and Powershot S60. I checked with Inon regarding compatibility, and their response is below.

"The D-2000 (D-2000 replaced the D-180/180S) is compatible but we don’t produce an optical cable/cap set in order to attach it to the WP-DC40. We produce specific caps for the housings that we support. I have head that other customers have tried the Epoque or Sea & Sea Velcro in order to attach our optical cable to the housing but we haven’t tested such a combination. Basically the function of the cap is to hold an Inon optical cable in front of the cameras internal strobe in order to pick up infrared light to trigger the D-2000 so as long as you can find a way to attach the optical cable to your housing the D-2000 should work."

Does anyone have experience with using the Velcro attachment method he suggests? If so, how well does it work?

Also, comments on the Inon vs other strobes would be appreciated -- I'm still trying to figure out what to get.

Thanks,
Dave

just tagging along. i've got a canon s70 with the wp-dc40 housing and am curious about getting a strobe possibly. would love some info as well.

Hi, I have the Canon A-85 with the Sea & Sea YS-90 auto and the velco attached fiber optic cable. The velcro attachment actually works way better than I expected on the WP-DC30 housing. Assuming the fitting on the Inon is the same as the one on the Sea & Sea patch you should be good to go. I'm pretty happy with the YS-90 which has worked great for me so far. I got a great price on it so I went that way rather than the Inon but probably would have gone with the Inon at the same price as I really like some of its added features.

Buy Inon with optical cable. You can make your own velcro thingy.

Basically all you need to do it make sure the end of the optical cable 'sees' the internal flash to trigger the strobe. Then have some form of cover for the internal flash in order to prevent it from lighting unwanted particles.

I think the optical cable comes with the inon 'clear water' patches. I know people here use them and confirm they block out all visble light. So just wack one of them over the internal flash, attach the optical cord anyway you can to see the internal flash and your away.

Ask Alcina she doesn't have the inon mount for her A70 and got her Z220S working perfectly with it - it would be easy. Only reason I got the mount was because I wanted the add-on lenses.

I've been looking at YS-90, which seems to be a good workhorse and is widely available, but I'm leaning toward the Inon with the additional features. I guess I'll just have to see how much Santa has is his budget! Thanks for your feedback and advice.

Why not use this?

The above is link is paired w/ Inon arms, but we use ULCS instead. I don't know if you were planning to come to the Florida Dive Show in W. Palm or not, but we are going to have a pretty hot special on a package for your camera there...

Ryan, pss - DrDave's post was from Dec 2004. The 28AD mount base for the S60/S70 didn't come out til early this year...

sure can... see the following link

http://inonamerica.com/content/docs/D2000_Chart.pdf

you'll see that the DC50(A95) is listed there. I'll let Ryan or any other Inon retailer give you a price on that package... but ballpark about US$500-$520 for the D-2000, and around $200-$300 in all the accessories you will need (adapter, base/grip, arms, ball joints, optical cord...). And that is not including any macro or wide angle add on lenses...

edit: now that the D-2000 W is out, maybe you can find some deals on the older standard D-2000.
