That's strange indeed. My version of Moviemaker (ver. 5.1) lists the .avi format in the Help Topics as one of the supported file types.

Weird- I just tried it again, and while I thought it said "file format unsupported", it actually says:
"P6040058.AVI could not be imported. Unspecified error"

huh. I'm using Vista and it came with it. I'll keep poking around to see if I can fix it. I also downloaded Ulead movie editor and I'm going to see if I like that or not.
 
Weird Windows.
Did you open the file by rightclicking and then 'open with moviemaker'? That action gave the same error with my file. (I'm using XP).
However when I first opened the program and then clicked on 'import video' the movie was properly imported.
