I have to disagree that the people in Providencia are very friendly; especially by Colombian standards. I live on mainland Colombia (Bogota) and have been to Providencia twice. Service there is kind of bad and the people there have the typical islander attitude of not caring. Having said that I'm going back in January.
Both the folks on Providencia and the folks on San Andrés consider themselves English and hate the mainland Spanish. At least that's what they told me in 2004.

I don’t think that’s accurate. You won’t find many people wearing England soccer jerseys, on the other hand you’re likely to spot islanders wearing Colombian yellow jerseys. I think hey are more like Okinawans who identify themselves as primarily being from Okinawa rather than Japan.
