Hi. We are going to PNG in May and will be taking a 10-day trip on the liveaboard Telita. We are starting at Tawali in Milne Bay and finishing at Tufi Dive Resort. My problem is that I can't figure out how long to stay at Tufi once we get off the boat. We will definitely want to dive some more, so we figured out that due to the flight schedules, we can either stay 5 additional days at Tufi, or 8 additional days.

My question is, will we get bored with the diving and/or the resort if we stay for 8 days? My travel agency (Reef and Rainforest) recommends that Tufi might be a bit too "sleepy" to stay that long. Any feedback from anyone who's been there? Thanks.

I spent alot of time in PNG and stayed at Tufi a couple of years ago. The diving there is not the best in PNG howver it has some good muck diving in the Fiords, some nice offshore reefs and the setting is spectacular. It sits on the top of the fiords and really is special. It is very quiet and it is the only thing there but it is lovely and eating on the deck over the fiord is one of the most spectacular places to eat anywhere.

The main draw with staying there in my opinion is the fact that you can dive the Wreck of the S'Jacob. It is deep dive and not for everyone since it sits in 65m with the top of the funnel at about 35m. It is howver one of the most amazing places you will find underwater. It was bombed in WWII and it is now completly covered in hard and soft corals. Nothing has been removed from the wreck so the prop etc is still there. The amount of fish life is mind boggling and it even has a semi resident tiger shark and according to some a manta cleaning station. It makes the Yongala in Australia look like tug boat in a river!

The only critisism I have, when we were there they were using aboat called 'Divemaster' which was the slowest old tub in the world and it was terrible in anything other than a mill pond. My wife did not dive for two days simply because she could not face the boat ride. We eneded up trading in dives and just diving in the fiords to use the faster boat to get to dive the Jacob.
