My first post on my first scuba forum...

I'm Dan and am from Eatontown, NJ. I enrolled in classes with Dosil's to obtain my OW cert. The extent of my underwater experience beyond basic swimming is just some snorkeling in Aruba, Bermuda and Key West.

My gf and her sister are both certified advanced with a bunch of specialty certs. So, I'll have some catching up to do.

My diving will be recreational and vacational ;) I'm not really looking forward to my Dutch Springs OW dives since I hate the cold, but I'll manage.

Anyway, I'm excited to be a member of the forum and ready to learn as much as possible about the latest and greatest gadgets I probably don't need, new places to check out and meeting new people!

......the latest and greatest gadgets I probably don't need.......

OK now stop that crazy talk right away :D. You need toys and SCUBA is a never ending pool of toy shopping. Have fun with it.

Thanks Mark.

Steve, I have been to Beneath the Sea every year for the past 6 years. I love me some new gadgets and stuff, but hate parting with my money ;)

Gadgets are fine as long as they aren't all dangling from your harness. It's been said "If you've never left anything on the bottom, you're not doing anything underwater!" But at least the rest of the time you are streamlined and don't have things flopping all over the place. Cheers.

Does this mean you won't be joining us for the underwater Easter egg hunt at Dutch Springs on April 23rd?

otter2, sounds fun except for the coldness. I'm fully expecting to shiver my butt off on my check out dives =\

me likey warm water ONLY! :D

Well dress appropriatly. if your not in a hurry to get your OW checkouts done you could always wait till June when water warms up usually about 65-70 on the surface and down to the platform where you will do most skills.

If not enjoy the dive and a Drysuit rental could work wonders....

Good luck in your class and hope to see you up at dutch sometime

I got certified at Dutch last June on Fathers Day weekend and the air/surface temp was great. The platform, however, sat a few feet below the thermocline. I could reach up when kneeling and feel the warm water above my head. It was cold cold cold. Needed gloves and a hood. Bottom temp at the Comet was a balmy 54 degrees. :-) Your dive shop will give you the appropriate stuff to rent when out do the checkout dives. the cold really is not too bad. You can feel it tying to come through the suit but as long as it fits well, you will be fine. My biggest pet peve so far with the cold is having to wear a lot of weight because of suit thickness. The cold by itself isn't too bad.
