As a former Nielsen employee, I can say for sure that unless you have the Nielsen equipment in your house, you are not contributing to a shows ratings.

There are far more ways to contribute to a show's perceived popularity and "ratings". The more times it can be seen to be referenced anywhere in search engine crawls of the web, the more popular it is. Even negative mentions are still positive because it is still spreading the knowledge of the show's airing.
