I was wondering about accidents in general when the first attempts to use breathing devices underwater were being developed. Before any classes or training. Who were the Wright brothers of diving?

When man first discovered boats were a way to travel across the water he soon discovered that diving was needed if he was to recover the boat and/or its cargo.

I don’t know if there are any diving pics on cave walls but it wasn’t long after that when diving research started. Even in the time of Columbus, which could be called modern, they were diving fairly deep and recovering cargo from sunken vessels.

So to answer tour question, a long flippin time.;)

In over fifty years of diving I can remember coughing on aspirated water when snorkeling. I also remember having my regulator kicked out of my mouth, without aspiration, a few times, a few incidents, a few exhaust valve failures, that resulted in VERY wet breathing (no coughing) and two strange incidents where I was left with the mouthpiece, no regulator, and water coming in ... but again no aspiration.

I just saw your profile. I don't think you count anymore;) You have probably forgotten more than I will ever know, same goes for your lil conch.:D
Thanks for all the input, it is helping even though I keep finding more questions with the more I discover. I won't bother addressing deco this early, I haven't even got a serviceable wetsuit yet. I'm still splashing around in the surf in an old 3/2 till I get cold.

Some day (soon I hope) maybe I will be able to enjoy more of this planet thanks to you and all the others here on SB.

That was an awesome answer, do you write for natl geo?;)

Now I wish I had just worded the question properly:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3::rofl3::rofl3:

I meant s.c.u.b.a. type. staying under water while breathing from a device carried along with you. I was wondering who invented it?
I tried using a balloon once as a kid but I couldn't get it to go under.
