I have been lurking but haven’t had time to post recently but I felt compelled to tell everyone about the best SCUBA diving trip ever!!!!

My husband and I headed down to Key Largo for the sole purpose of diving. We hooked up with a great outfit Quiessence. Those folks are awesome!!

Also, this was my first ocean/boat dive ever so I was a bit nervous. We got on the boat and started putting our gear together. I remembered how to do everything but I was still nervous. Also, for my first ocean dive, luckily we were on the boat with a great captain and a great group of fellow divers. The Captain was Mike and we dove with Jimmy, Dave and Joel. They were all a great bunch of guys.

We finally arrived at our first destination of French Reef. I didn’t want to be the first in the water because I was still a little nervous about what I was suppose to do and how to jump in so I stood back and watched a couple of other guys go first. Then it was my turn. That one jump is all it took and I never looked back. Also, I had posted a while ago that I had a fear of being in the water next to the boat; well, that fear is completely gone. Once I was in the water and went down, I never wanted to come up. SCUBA diving is the most fun I have ever had. After that, I was the first one on the edge of the boat waiting for my BC for the rest of the dives. I wanted to be the first one in and the last one out. I felt like a kid.

We did four dives during our stay in Key Largo. We dove French Reef, the winch hole at Molasses Reef, the City of Washington wreck and the fourth dive was some elbow something (I can’t remember). We saw so much stuff too. There were a ton of varieties of very colorful fish. I know the names of most but will spare those details. We were also lucky enough to see a beautiful Reef Shark and a couple of Terrapin that were bigger than me.

Anyway, I am hooked. I can’t wait to go again. My pocket book is going to be on perpetual empty as I plan my future dive trips.

I also want to keep learning and get more certifications too. The possibilities are endless!!!

Things I learned:

-Take extra care when clearing my mask underwater. ( I cleared it once and got salt water in my eyes and could barely see for a few minutes while my tears cleaned my eyes.)

-I need to be more conscientious about navigation. (this had nothing to do with my not being able to see as described above :crafty: ) However, I tend to get lost on land too, so I may be hopeless. The only time I knew exactly where the boat was was when we were diving a wreck. Thank goodness my husband/dive partner has that inborn navigational system. He never gets lost. I will work on this skill though

-That it is impossible to urinate while diving….or at least it is for me. Why is this?

-Minute bouyancy changes can be done by how big/little of a breath you take instead of having to mess with the BC inflator/deflator.

-When in Key Largo, it is imperative to visit The Fish House Restaurant and order the catch of the day ‘black and blue’ style!!!

-Key Largoeans are wonderful people but they all play that Bertie Higgins “Key Largo” song way too much.

I know I learned much more but can’t remember everything now.

Sorry for the long post, it’s just that I have discovered the best sport ever!!!!

Well BlueBlur, it's official, you are obsessed with scuba, like many here on the board. Have fun and buy the best equipment you can afford.
David

btw: you can update your profile to include your dives

It's severely addictive, isn't it?

I got certified this summer in shore diving in Puget Sound (cold pea soup) and just got home from my first trip to dive in warm water you can see through, and from a boat, no less. I'm with you -- I can't wait for the next trip, and the next, and . . .

Living in the desert makes life a little hard for a diver. We live for our trips. Just got back from the last one booked. Hubby came home last night and said, "We gotta get a dive trip booked ahead so I can have something to look forward to or I am going to go crazy."

I agree. It is just going through the motions when you have no diving to look forward to. Where do you suggest we go next?

Welcome! There is no turning back. Just break out the plastic and head to the nearest dive shop. They can supply your habit.

Yup, sounds like you're addicted. To keep costs down you can dive locally in various lakes and quarries. It's not as nice I'm sure, but you will get wet and not spend as much money. ;)

In a way that's good, I know of dive shops that have a policy, if you piss in it you buy it. On the other hand you can do what many of us divers do, jump back in minus the wetsuit and hang motionless and go. Some just go to the back of the boat. If you have no wetsuit on, then just hang for a bit and wait.

The water was like a nice bathwater temperature so no wetsuits were worn by anyone. However, I still couldn't go while swimming. I guess my ab muscles are contracted or something so I had to wait until I came up and was waiting to climb aboard. Anyway, sorry for all the potty talk. :D

You picked an excellent locale for beginning diving.

That in itself can make or break your experience.

Its elbow reef -

Diving is like eating potato chips...you can't stop! it's the most addicting sport around and i think the most expensive one also. I can't remember how much we've spent on equipment and upgrades. it's so much fun though. we do about 4-5 trips a yr. and they are all booked ahead of time just for something to look forward too. so, good luck and be safe.
