I'm gonna be visiting a friend, just north of Sacramento in about a month and we'd like to do some diving in the kelp. Or, well, just diving in general.

Any suggestions for dive shops/sites around the area?

Are you looking to dive around Sacramento or go to the Coast? We need more information from you before we can help with meaningful advice! :)

Actually, I'm flying into Sacramento, but staying with my friend in Elk Grove, and I'll be there feb 10th(Sunday) through the 17th(Sunday). Thus, that leaves me with 5 potential diving days.

Haha, I'd like to go to the coast.

As for more info:
It'll be two of us diving, I'm a DM (although I still might not have my cert card by then, thus showing them a rescue car) and she's AOW. Neither of us are drysuit certified, so will likely be diving in 7mm with hoods, boots, and gloves. That is, unless theres a shop out there that gives a little lesson in drysuits before renting them out?

I'd go to the Breakwater in Monterey. You can rent everything you'll need from Glenn's Aquarius II on the Breakwater. There might even be someone there or at one of the other dive shops that could rent you drysuits and give you a class on them if you wanted.
If you wanted to do a boat dive there are several boats out of Monterey and all are good.

I went snorkeling in the American River a few months back (not diving, but certainly closer to Sacramento.) I'd never been snorkeling in rapids before, but its was quite fun/terrifying. Might be too cold now though...

Hope you enjoy your stay in California!

Oh hah, awesome. Long live (living) fossils!
