I'm a Fish!
I asked Ikelite about the status of a housing for the D80. I got this reply:

Chris,

Ikelite is presently evaluating the following new digital still cameras for possible new housing model introductions. These new cameras are not listed in the updated housing guide, but new housing information will presented as new models are finalized in the upcoming weeks. Please let us know if there are other new camera models that you would like Ikelite to consider for new housings.

Canon EOS 400D, Digital Rebel XTi
Canon A630
Canon A640
Canon A710 IS

Nikon D80
Nikon L5
Nikon L6

Olympus Stylus 740, MJU740
Olympus Stylus 750, MJU750
Olympus Stylus 1000, MJU1000

Sony A100

ETA at least two months.

Regards, Ikelite Underwater Systems

the reply

Matt,

We are behind.

ETA has been moved to November 15th for the 6808.1 housing.

Tom

Does anybody have an idea of what would be the best way to get one of these when they do come out? Are there any waiting lists?

David

Actually, I called Reef Photo right after my last posting and ordered a housing. I'm number one in line when they get them in. Wooohooo!! They're one of the biggest distributors of Ikelite, so I figure they'll get them early on.

Richard said that he had a Sea & Sea housing at the store and it wasn't a pre-production prototype.

David

I know Sea&Sea are many more $ than Ikelite but they are far better and far smaller. I bought the Ikelite housing for my F80 and replaced it one trip later with the Sea&Sea housing. My wife & I now have DSLRs d70 & D50 both in Sea&Sea housings. Compare the Ike with Sea&Sea side by side if you can.

Yes, you can preorder an Ike housing. ryan@reefphoto.com is a good start.

As to "better" it's all a bit subjective, really, so it is important to do your homework and ask a lot of questions to make sure you are getting the system that will suit you.

I live down the street from Reef Photo so I headed on over there to say hey to my old friends. Yea I just bought the D80 and I will receive it tomorrow. I checked out the new sea and sea housing they have for it. I love that store.

Any chance to customize an ike d70 housing to house the d80 as the camera is almost the same size ? Think I read somewhere that Nexus were going to offer to do that, so it would be great if Ikelite could do something similar !
