Iggy: Hey, NetDoc!

NetDoc: Yes, Iggy?

Iggy: I just got my first computer.

NetDoc: That's great Iggy. What did you get?

Iggy: A 2.0 GHz Pentium IV, with 512 Megs of RAM, a 120 Gig hard drive, and a 48X CD-ROM.

NetDoc: That's terrific, Iggy!

Iggy: But I don't know what any of it means!

NetDoc: You will in time.

Iggy: That's exactly why I am here to see you.

NetDoc: Oh?

Iggy: I heard that you are a real computer expert.

NetDoc: Well, I don't know...

Iggy: Yes-sir-ee. You know your stuff. And you're going to train me.

NetDoc: Really?

Iggy: Uh huh. And I am here for my first lesson.

NetDoc: O.K. Iggy. What do want to know?

Iggy: I am having no problem turning it on, but I heard that you should be very careful how you turn it off.

NetDoc: That's true.

Iggy: So, here I am working on my new computer and I want to turn it off. What do I do?

NetDoc: Well, first you press the Start button, and then...

Iggy: No, I told you, I want to turn it off.

NetDoc: I know, you press the Start button...

Iggy: Wait a second. I want to turn it off. OFF. I know how to start it. So tell me what to do.

NetDoc: I did.

Iggy: When?

NetDoc: When I told you to press the Start button.

Iggy: Why should I press the Start button?

NetDoc: To shut off the computer.

Iggy: I press Start to stop ?

NetDoc: Well, Start doesn't actually stop the computer.

Iggy: I knew it! So what do I press.

NetDoc: Press Start

Iggy: Start what?

NetDoc: The Start button.

Iggy: Start button to do what?

NetDoc: Shut down.

Iggy: You don't have to get rude!

NetDoc: No, no, no! That's not what I meant.

Iggy: Then say what you mean.

NetDoc: To shut down the computer, press...

Iggy: Don't say, "Start!"

NetDoc: Then what do you want me to say?

Iggy: Look, if I want to turn off the computer, I am willing to
press the Stop button, the End button and Cease and Desist button, but no one in their right mind presses the Start to Stop.

NetDoc: But that's what you do.

Iggy: I am starting this conversation right now.
..........Good-bye.

I know this sounds like a joke but I have had that very conversation with a 2000 user.

What did I do?

Told him to hit control, alt, del and then click the shut down button.

Problem solved. No more hitting the Start button to shut down the computer.

This very story was responisble for me getting a very good deal on a new computer! Our local big chain store sold a brand new computer to some folkes for $798 US who then took it home and turned it on just fine. Went to turn it off and it didn't work so they pulled the plug. Plugged it back in and they couldn't get it turn on. So.... they brought it back to the store for a refund.

The department mangager stuck it on a shelf and started to mark it down approx $50 every 2 weeks. When it reached $320 I bought it. Took it home, absolutely nothing was wrong with the computer. As I suspected no one had ever read the above story to them.

Remember, never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!:D

Especially at MS headquarters!
"Start" to shut down indeed...
Perfectly logical - to someone... somewhere... right?
