...but one of the WKPP divers did a freedive down to MHK and JJ on the platform during our class, had a brief hand signal conversation with them about how it was time to wrap up the class and head out, and then surfaced.

We saw him on the video review that night and got a kick out of it.

Mouth Breather, its been a long time since I actually laughed out loud at a post. That was pretty funny stuff....

Ofcourse, I had the visual of grabbing the free divers ankles..lololol

Thanks for the laugh, I needed it.

Jason

Mouth Breather,

I seriously hope that's merely a joke in bad taste. I'd hate to think you're serious about murder. It's not funny, even in jest.

If you are serious, you're likely to be in for a surprise the first time you try it. I'd pull off your mask, rip out your regulator and if you were still holding my ankles (unlikely at this point) break your finger.

miked,

Never offer a free diver compressed air. They are on a breath hold dive. They may or may not be certified to dive on SCUBA. They may or may not know holding their breath while ascending after a breath of compressed air can kill them. Even if they know better and are certified, it can be difficult to make the transition from breath hold to blowing bubbles in mid dive.

Good Point about the air Walter. That has happened to people in only 15 fet of water.

Anyway, I have had freedivers come down on me in many places before. Some were normal, others were odd.

In Ginnie Springs Devils System, you regularly see freedivers down at the cavern entrance looking around while you are doing deco. It gives you something to watch. Granted it is only in the 15-30 foot range though. However, I have seen some enter the cavern on a free dive. Nuts.

I have also been in the cave at Vortex Springs, and when I came out, there was a freediver at the entrance. That was about 65 feet if I recall. That was a little strange. I talked to him when we came up, and he said he did that all the time there, as he was not scuba certified.

Good point about being careful offering air to a free diver.

As far as the joke goes, you need to lighten up ALOT! It was clearly a joke. What is even more humorous is your comment...."I'd pull off your mask, rip out your regulator and if you were still holding my ankles (unlikely at this point) break your finger." I don't think that is very nice to say...are you joking?

:mean:

it has happened to me at a local quarry i dive. At first i was in awe that he was able to do this, we were at 50 feet, and he would just dive down, look at stuff casually and go back up. After him swimming in front of us, underneath us, and generally being annoying, i got mad. I waved him to get out of the way, and we never seen him since....weird guy......

jepuskar,

It was not clear that it was a joke. I hope it is a joke, but some things aren't funny. It might be funny in person where you can see expressions and hear inflection. In print, it's not funny. Some people tell dead baby jokes.

No. I am not joking. If someone attacks me, I will defend myself. Mouth Breather described a very serious, life threatening attack. That's exactly how I would defend myself in the event of such an attack.

Larry,

Sorry, but I'm not following you. My "past due for a vacation dude"? What is a "past due for a vacation dude"? I don't think I have a "past due for a vacation dude". Assuming I do have one, what about it?

Walter,
When it happened, I thought there could be something like the problems/difficulties to which you referred, but I wasn't sure.
After the dive I asked the DM in question, and he said basically the same thing as you did in your post. (I probably should have mentioned that in my earlier post.)
Nonetheless, thanks for the info.
Mike

I, for one, thought it was funny. I can't imagine any of us (divers) seriously considering such behavior. It as funny!
