If you were scuba diving and a free diver were to descend and swim into your sight unexpectedly, what would your thoughts be? What would they be even if it was expected? Say the depth is at least 40'. Or what about 100'? Has it happened to you?

Hasn't happened to me personally, but my wreck instructor said he likes to freedive down to the Yukon for kicks and wave at divers. It's in the 60-100' range.

It happened to me on a dive (50-75 ft ) at a wreck. One of the DMs was "just finning around" the outside of the wreck. I smiled, waved, offered him an octo. He politely declined, waved, and surfaced. I must admit that I was impressed.
Good question, it brought back a nice memory.:)

Yes It's happened to me. DM Alex with AquaNuts in Key Largo surprised us by showing up unencumbered by any air supply while we were diving the Benwood wreck. It's not terribly deep, 30-40 ', but I still thought it was pretty cool. He swam down, said "hi" and ascended. Heck of a nice guy, too.

An instructor I met in the South Pacific said he often had to deal with individuals (usually in couples where one partner doesn't dive) where one would hire scuba equipment and dive and the other partner wearing snorkelling gear would breath from the diver's octopus. He said this was happening at depths where a breath-holding ascent would almost guarantee the snorkeller grave injury.

It is actually quite fun to freedive down to 50+ feet and look at the divers. Funny they always think you are out of air and an alternate is always offered! For some it can be really startling. I wouldn't recommend doing it to entry level divers! :)

I don't know what I think. I would proabely be asking myself where the H@ll is all his scuba stuff. I think it would be a memorial experiance though it might be startling

I'd waive real friendly like, then just as he/she was starting to ascend I would grab him by the ankles. Of course he would freak out and start to panic. I would wait till his eyes got as big as saucers and he started flailing around like a carp on a boat dock. Then I would let him go at the very last minute and watch him shoot to the surface. Later during the surface interval my dive buddy and I would have a very funny story to share with the other scuba divers on the boat.
