My husband and I are in the middle of contemplating a raider BC to ebay to BP wings conversion when we started thinking about canister lights (Mo2vation's internal dialogue in another post got us thinking).

So now the question, has anyone thought about or tried to see if it is possible to convert a light cannon HID into a canister HID ??

Not that we are planning on doing that (hard to justify messing with my brand new toy), but curiosity got the better of me.

I wise man once said that the only cure for boredom is curiousity, but there is no known cure for curiousity...

Let us know how your HID conversion goes (you know you wanna try it!)

And someone else said curiosity killed the cat (must be why they have nine lives!).

I've been out of the water for a few weeks now so I've only been able to think about diving - can ya tell?!

I've made several canister lights and they worked great althought they were all Halogen lights. I looked into building a HID but was having a hard time finding ballasts that were small enough to fit into the light head. If you deside to play around with your new toy and want some pointers on building your own canister set up, let me know. I'd also like to know how it works, I might try doing the same thing myself.

Good luck,

Probably makes more sense to Ebay the LC 100, buy a HID light head with built-in balast somewhere and do a DIY battery case.

That is just what I was going to suggest. I still have my box and my LC in near new shape. I'm gonna eBay my LC to effectively take another $100 off the light head and will likely DIY with the cannister.

I'm a complete loser in the workshop. I'm a musician and a sales professional - I don't have the tinkerer's gene.

I've been inside my LC many times... the balast and HID element are all contained in that module. Its pretty small. If one could fashion a watertight seal and solder to the contacts the powersource, I think its a plausable idea.

With all the resident mad scientists, McGyvers and Goldbergs on this board, it might happen sometime.

I don't suppose you've got more detailed plans or written instructions? I've been toying with building a video housing.

Your assimilation is almost complete...you've gone from "I'll never buy a cannister light, who would ever pay that much money for a flashlight" to ebaying the LC.

Man this is funny, you are a couple months ahead of us in terms of switching everything out...Visa is our friend.

:D

I've been combing this site (a several others) considering the whole canister light thing. Its been a struggle. Quite a struggle. Its just so much hoople for a light. I can honestly make a case for everything else, gear wise (jury's still out on the stubby fins....) in a deeper sense than "dude needs more gear...." What pushed me up to the ledge (not quite over, yet) recently were four things:

a) My last Dive boat trip - on my 3rd dive I left the LC topside. Big mistake...as it was the third dive, we were in the kelp, the clouds had moved in, etc. It was pretty dark down there, and I would have felt better with a light. It got left in the bag because I simply forgot it. I forgot it because it wasn't integrated into the rig.

b) In one post, I read UP state he'd dive up his doubles and (I think it was) his drysuit before giving up the 10w HID. That's a very powerful testimony to me. In the same thread he spoke of the signaling, communication and better buddy dividend of the 10w HID. For me, a light has been very utilitarian - I schlep it along to see stuff. That thread, and his post helped to elevate the light to a piece of essential safety gear - not just a "light", you know? it really changed the way I thought about it. While the sticker shock remains, the value of the piece has gone up tremendously.

c) LAL7176's thread about his Stealth Light - the set up, the anticipation, when it arrived, his review. Very cool thread. That's the thread that sort of pushed me to the edge, really.

d) I was a part of O-Ring's recent light reference post. While it was no Mac&Beef and sure no "clip off fido like a stage..." it was in that class. You could literally see him go home, pull out the rig, and see his mouth agape in horrah as he stared at that 55 gallon drum he calls a light. His reply was juvenile, genius, and very concise: "I hate you all...." I fell out of my chair. There was also lots of good light info in that post. But honestly, I just wanna be more like him. :out:

Yeah - the assimiliation continues. The only thing funnier than watching my public humiliation has been watching the public humiliation of all the boys and girls as they endure the wrist strain of updating their profile photos to clamor and compete in the hottest male/female nonesense next door.

I'm in the DIR/F class at the end of the month, my turtles will be in Tuesday, my SPG came in Thursday, my wetnotes and spool came in Friday, I just eBayed my brass snaps and upgraded to SS this weekend...yeah. I'm pretty much on the dark side these days.

Edited again and again because I can't spel...or tpye. :D

Did you take a look at the video housing I made? It's on the same site as the light. I'ts not to difficult to do, if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. I don't have a big shop, mostly just hand tools and a few basic power tools but the housing works great, and I even recently added the lights.

I do have a set of very detailed instructions with many more pictures of exactly how I built the light. I could email you everything if you have a highspeed connection. I also have it all on CD.

Check it out. Camera Housing
