Has anyone done their IDC with Scuba Cat in Phuket Thailand? Looking for a great mentorship program and some good diving as an added bonus. Any feedback appreciated!

You won't be doing much fun diving during IDC itself. Any good diving would be before or after IDC.

I run IDCs on Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. There are great opportunities for employment after the IDC, especially on Koh Phi Phi... The west coast of Thailand has been excellent recently too, lots of whale shark sightings and mantas, plus some cool macro like seahorses and harlequin shrimp about...

If you'd like some more information, please email - info@go-pro-in-paradise.com

What time of year are you looking to do your IDC?

Are you looking at a straight IDC or an instructor internship?

The IDC course itself is very short with limited mentoring whoever you do it with. It is what you do either before the IDC or after it that makes the difference. I am the owner and one of the course directors for Kiwidiver in Phuket and I am happy to talk to you in detail about different options that we offer if you are interested. Become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) in Phuket with a PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)

Been thinking about doing my IDC in Phuket, Thailand but now thinking about Bali, Indonesia instead. If you had a free ticket to anyplace in the world to do your IDC, where would you do it?

Mahalo,

Dave, that would depend what part of the world you live in. I live in US and was in the same situation. I had 3 weeks of PTO I could use (have more but couldn't use all at once) so I chose Roatan, Honduras (Barefoot Divers, CD Gary Miller).

Aloha Kevin,

I have been considering going to "All 4 Diving" in Phuket to do my IDC. I like their IDC/MSDT Internship that runs 4 months +. I would be very interested to see what your operation has to offer in comparison to All 4 Diving's program. I do not like the whole rush to to your IDC in 2 weeks thing. I like to learn from hands on experience in a laid back environment and not feel rushed. Please email me some info. on your Internship program for IDC & MSDT and I will send you a copy of the program breakdown from All 4 Diving (what's included, cost, etc...) I plan on leaving Hawaii in late November around Thanksgiving.

I look forward to hear from you.

Aloha Iztok,

I am in Hawaii right now, but I can go anywhere in the world to do my IDC. No time limit and no boundary. I want a long IDC Internship program that's laid back and in the most desirable area in which to dive.

Mahalo,

Where to do your IDC? Well I think that is the last thing to consider.
Who to do Your IDC with is the most important question to ask!!
Your IDC is a lot of time in the classroom and pool learning how to teach diving the PADI way. So that classroom and pool could be anywhere however the important thing is to find the right mentor that is going to give you the best training for your money.

Many of the large dive center IDC's are just production lines pumping through as many candidates as possible and one on one time with the course director is limited. This is fine if you are looking to just get a pass for the lowest investment.
If you really want to learn about being the best instructor you can be then you need to choose your Course Director carefully. Look for skills in your course director that you think you will find valuable in the kind of diving you want to do.

If you want to eventually own your own business then find a Course Director that has the experience of owning a dive business and is not just a contractor or employee. If that doesn’t interest you but Technical diving does then look for a CD who teaches Tec and if your passion is underwater archeology then find a CD that specializes in that.

Seriously consider a “Mentoring Internship” package with the Course Director if you want the best kick start to your career.
When you have found the right CD that is going to provide the education you want then you will know where to do your IDC.

I have been considering going to "All 4 Diving" in Phuket to do my IDC.

For Phuket, I would definitely recommend Christophe at All4Diving. Christophe has been a CD for well over ten years, teaches a thorough and fun IDC, and has a wealth of experience from all over the world...

Hey Emma

My name is Paul and I am a Master Instructor at Dive Downbelow in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo and it's great that you want to become a PADI Instructor....it's an amazing lifestyle.

I totally agree with Kevin that it's more about who you do it with. However, don't just focus on the Course Director, also think about the team he has to support him as it is a clear benefit during an IDC. For example here we have 1 Platinum Course Director, 2 Master Instructors and 4 IDC Staff Instructors.

I would also be weary of anyone offering a guarantee pass or job offers (thinking logically this rings alarm bells).

When I chose to come to Kota Kinabalu to do my IDC one of the most important reasons was the visa issues....here you get 3 months on arrival so no worries about having to head out of the country after a month. Also here you an live beach lifestyle during the day and the city lifestyle at night (our awesome dive centre is located on a secluded beach in the marine park 10 minutes from the city).

Any questions about IDC in general feel free to contact me!
