I've read various books. I always come back to this one adage: "Underwater photography exists to make us humble."

Seriously, though, some of the best advice I ever got was to pick one or a few spots, and keep going back, staying there, and do your photography at that spot on multiple occasions over the course of numerous dives.
 
I’ve found that second half in particular really helpful.

I’ve got 4 spots I’ll go to when I just want to work on shooting. They’re great because I know the areas certain fish like hanging out, and I know where the interesting rock formations are etc. it’s really helped me learn lighting and strobes since the main variable is ambient light
