Ckharlan and I decided to go diving today. It has been fairly cold recently and this morning when I headed out to the lake it was 26 degrees F with a nice breeze. When I got there I found that there was ice on the lake!!
Being the intrepid divers we are we decided we would dive anyways---since "ck" has apparently read a book or pamphlet about ice diving. It was kind of tough getting a hole in the ice using big rocks to knock a hole in the ice. We had some rope from the rocking excursion with Kymermaid divr so we tied it to the trailer hitch and dropped it through the hole. The holes was only about 2.5 ft in diameter but we finally got through.
Surface water temp was 40 and at 20 feet it was 36. Viz was 4 to 5 feet. "ck's" cheap regulator started free flowing shortly after the dive started so we fiddled around trying to fix that for about 4 minutes. Its a good thing he learned how to buddy breath last year.
"ck" was lead diver with the compass and took a left turn at Albecurque( i.e. into shallow water) I got him turned around and we headed back to the deep water. I noticed that "ck" was missing so I did the standard look around walk about and then headed to the surface to see if he was there( which he was)
All in all it was a reasonable dive for local Ky lakes. I found out later that "ck" had the pamphlet but has yet to read it.
The drysuits did keep us warm
