Is this just a fable or is it really possible to dive (safely) beneath the ice? If so is there anyone out there that has done it?

I've done it twice. Just not sure about the "safe" part. :D

Lots of crazy people do it every winter. I'm sure someone will post a pic for you.

No....Diving under the ice is just as dangerous as diving at altitude. No One in their right mind would ever do anything as crazy as that.
 
Options can be limited. If it's a choice between (A) or (B), lots of folks will find themselves (C). Besides, you haven't lived until you've tried upside down hockey...
