My brother Alan posted this video a couple of weeks ago as 'Canon 7D under the Ice' on the Underwater Videography forum, where it had great feedback - but then we thought in that specialist forum it might not be seen by many Ontario divers who are not videographers but would still enjoy the film. So here it is:

YouTube - David Gibbins diving under the ice in Tobermory, Ontario

Alan took this over two dives we did on Saturday 9 April at Lighthouse Point. We were amazingly lucky with the weather - the light conditions were perfect and the wind was minimal, but over the previous day the NE wind had blown the remaining ice into the shifting pack you can see in this video. The larger chunks of ice were like miniature icebergs with most of their bulk underwater, and swimming inverted just below them was a surreal experience. The light shining through the crushed ice between the chunks created amazing refraction and shadow effects, as you can see especially in the sequence he took of me swimming up towards the sun with the chunks of ice floating overhead like dark clouds in the sky.

I did my checkout dives with ACUC at Tobermory as a fifteen-year old in 1978, and even after thousands of dives all over the world since then I still think it's my favourite place to dive - a feeling very much reinforced by these dives we did in April.

I hope you enjoy it!

David

Very cool video, I was there also I think a day later. (was it you I met there? I was diving solo) By then, the ice was pushed out of the point into the bay. The best ice diving around here, I'll look forward to this time of the year and the same conditions.

Wow, wonderful video! Never considered ice diving around broken ice plates before.

G+S Watersports advertises support services for ice diving at Little Tub Harbour or at the Tugs. These services seem to include cutting the hole, setting up a tent and providing snowmobiles. Has anyone ever done this? How late into the spring (April?) is the ice thick enough to support this?
