I am considering diving and have had IBS for about 3 years and take no medication for it. Symptoms are at their worst in the morning and other than that I live a reasonably normal life.
My question is can I dive if I have IBS? Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Chris

I have IBS and absolutely love diving. It really gets hard when I am on vacation and my stomach is having a hard time adjusting. I just got back from a dive vacation and my stomach was sore a lot of the time. But I have to tell you...it is totally worth the pain! Actually, a lot of my IBS has to do with nerves, and the more I get used to diving, the more I find that it actually relaxes my stomach. By the last day, most of my syptoms disapeared. So...yes you can dive with IBS if you feel uncomfortable. There of course have been times when I am lying in the fetal position crying out in pain, and I wouldn't dive then, but I can handle diving with the minor ache. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any particular ?'s.

Thanks for the replies. I am currently in open water class and loving every minute of it. My IBS symptoms have not been as bad as yours Luvspoodles for about 2 years. Mostly just bathroom 3 times before work and 3 times after dinner and no pain. I agree about the stress thing and how it brings on symptoms. Thanks again and good luck.

Chris,

Some researchers believe that IBS has as a component, the overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine (SIBO).

Several friends of mine have successfully controlled the symptoms of IBS by taking high quality Lactobacillus spp. containing supplements once or twice a day.

My current girlfriend has essentially eliminated her clinical signs of IBS through the use of one of the GNC brands that contains multiple Lactobacillus species (the WalMart brands didn't perform well).

As a Vet, I've used these supplements as adjuncts to standard GI therapies in multiple species with reasonable outcome.

So, something try. It can take up to a week to have an effect.

As always, consult your family physician regarding this and any nutritional supplements as some may interact with other medications.

Is this a pill or a powder? Also, does it help symptoms of diaria (I have no idea how to spell that word!) or constipation?Do you think it might help with bloating and cramping?

DDD,

Thanks for the info I may just have to try it out. It would be nice to be symtom free.

I have IBS With diarrhea. I had been in pain from severe bloating and cramping for a 9-10 month period. I had been to some of the best docters around (Emory in Atlanta) and they still threw up their hands after finding nothing that would relieve the pain. I found a product called ThreeLac from global health trax and after the first day of using it the bloating has completely subsided. I can now tell which foods are causing me discomfort and have cleared up most of my symptoms. The bloating was so severe for so long that after it went away (1 day of taking threelac) my diaphram was back to it's regular size. It was sore as can be, you can tell since it had been strained and bloated for 9 months. I have no idea if threelac would work for your symptoms, but it has definately helped mine. It has helped so much that I have been able to go back to work and now I can take my open water cert classes next month.. :) I stumbled across this site one night while I was in total pain:

http://www.candidasupport.org/

I read some of the testimonals and was severely skeptical. I said what the heck, I've spent thousands on docter bills and every test imaginable, what is a few more dollars. I do have to say it was the best money I spent.
