Today I was at the local quarry. My rebreather instructor decided to join me. We did 2 dives. First dive was to 100 ft for 65 min. & the second dive was 93 ft for 77 min. As usual the water is bitterly cold down deep, but as long as I kept moving, I was OK. It made coming up into 55 degree water, feel like bath water. We did 35 min in the deep on the first dive & 40 min in the deep on the second dive, then just putzed around in the shallows to thaw out. Buoyancy was spot- on & they were just very peaceful & quiet dives..... Just what the Dr. ordered....:D

I hate you now. :(

I woke up at 3AM. Drove 3 hours to the coast. Got to the boat, packed the scrubbers, put everything together. Found a problem with the unit and had to make a decision. Could I have rigged something up to make the dives? Probably....but... In the end I decided I didn't want to find out if my slapped together solution would work at 100' 20 miles out in the ocean.

I took my gear off the boat and drove home. 6 hours of driving and thumbed the dives. I really wanted to get wet today, but I was taught not to take chances like that.

I know...

On a positive note, the boat didn't refund me, but they did give me a credit for a future dive. They very easily could have pulled out their cancellation policy and slapped me with it, but they were way cool about it. I think the boat captain was happy that I wasn't going to take an unnecessary risk.

Nothing like a peaceful RB dive...even though its cold. :D Bath water temp deco's are always a good reward. :)

As per thumbing a RB dive with a "funny acting" RB - it happens. Bites for sure. On epic expeditions we used to have a redundant rebreather (complete Cis Lunar/Inspiration/Megalodon) with us. The trips cost so much sometimes, plus days out at sea that it necessitated the other breather. Of course, the OC guys always used to chide us for being prima donna's with sophisticated gear.

Is it practical to take regular oc setup with you if you are making a long distance drive just in case the ccr is down so you won't lose the day?

If I am diving my local quarry (1-1/2 hrs away) I will typically take my doubles & neccesary set- up if my rebreather goes down. I have a large full sized pick- up, so plenty of room. When I go to Bonaire in July, I will be taking a travel BC & OC regulator, so that I won't have to miss too much diving if things go sideways.

Can you switch to an oc setup for your second dive after making your first dive with a ccr (for any reason you can't use the ccr after the first dive)? How would you handle the NDL and whole deco part if you do?

May have to sit out for about 12 hours or so to let the tissues clear... At most 1 days diving missed. I've never had it happen that way. If it isn't going to work, it usually does it from the start.

So the computer attached to the ccr can't be detached and used with an oc setup?
