I think I should have posted this question on this board!?

Hi, Im off to do my open water course in a couple of weeks, I am worried because I have over the past 10 years had 3 cases of back problems. No disc problems, just muscle spasms. I'm sure my doctor will sign me as being fit, but in October Im, off to Sharm el Sheihk in Egypt and Im worried that I'll have to pay for a local doctor to sign me as fit? Can anyone give me any advice? Has anyone with back problems got any advice for me? My last back problem was about 5 months ago and I'm fit and well again. PS. I have never dived before and the open water course will be my first steps to diving. Please help?!

First of all, recurring muscle spasms are indicative of something else awry. If you haven't done so already, get a back specialist (spine doc or physical therapist) to evaluate you and give you a solid diagnosis.

To supplement that, you should get Robin McKenzie's "Treat Your Own Back." You can find it at Amazon.com, or you can follow a direct link on one of my websites at http://www.formfitness.com/html/bookstore.html (in the interest of full disclosure, I earn a whopping 36 cents if you use my link). This teaches you a variety of exercises and behavior modifications that might do the trick for you.

I also have an article on how to handle dive gear on the surface while minimizing back strain. It's entitled "Dealing with Heavy Gear," and you can find it at http://www.divefitness.com/html/articles.html.

Keep your back happy, and you should have no problems diving. I doubt your doctor would have a problem clearing you given what you have stated.

Dear Cameron

thanks for your help on this one, the website was really useful. I've just spoken to the dive centre where I'm doing my course and there is no need for me to get my GP to sign me as fit.

Thanks again for your help.

:)
