Hello to everyone. I'm new to diving. I was certified 3 months ago and have logged 15 dives. I've recently purchased some fairly good equipment (mr 12 reg and vector pro bc), but would like to upgrade to a wing eventually. I've done tons of research on this board; however, I have one question: where do I get the chance to try out a wing before I go this route? I understand that they are kind of put together to suit a specific diver's needs, so I guess this makes it more difficult to try one. Anyway, I love diving and look forward to diving the Oriskany in a few months, as I live in Pensacola. Thanks for the help guys.
 
I didn't even try on my wing before buying my halcyon wing online. The wing setup is so much better than a jacket style bcd you may not have to worry about trying one on. After my 1 year old jacket Mares BC broke and I had some cash from selling the replacement. You may want to look to see if there is store close to try the wing on. Problem with a wing is some people see it when you dive and may think you are a tech or cave diver. :)

I love the mares regs but some people won't/can't service but they breath great. A good light is something to look into getting. Even in daytime it is nice to see into cracks. I like the proton led backup light and the salvo hid lights.

Where are you planning on going next? It's little cayman for me in Sept.

I dove in Mahahual and Cozumel in May and loved it. There are tons of places to dive here (Pensacola), so for now I'm going to explore this area. I would really like to get into spear fishing, but one thing at a time. The Oriskany is my next goal. It's only 20 miles off the coast of P'cola. Thanks for the advice! I've recently been looking at lights and am making that my next purchase.
 
go to diveriteexpress.com they have a spacial on a backplate wing combo. ive been diving the Dive Rite Tranplate with the venture wing for around 60dives ,and will never go back to a conventional BC.
 
Me too, I love diving especially going diving on Wednesday and Saturday. :)

If you are traveling alot the aluminum makes sense but if you go with the steel you will require less ditchable weight. Personally I went with a aluminum setup b/c I mostly dive in the tropics and I only use 7-8 lbs max. I went with the intergated pockets but a weight belt is just as good for most. You can always add a weight pocket later with the wing setup. That is what makes it so powerful, modularity.

How do you determine how much lift you need in a bladder. Obviously, if you are diving twins or a dry suit you are going to need more, so would it be overkill to get the bigger bladder for advancement in the future? Is there such a thing as too much lift?
