26 yr's ago i got in a car accident and received head injuries that caused me to have a 9cm by 5cm plate put in my scull. I was talking to one of my buddies about it and he said to consult a dive doc. I dove at 115 ft lately and have had no problems at all. should I ask a dive doctor or just go on diving ? Mike

I'm not a doctor, I'm an electrician.

As long as the injury is completely healed, and there are no airspaces captive within the "repair", you should have no problems.

A dive to 115ft was proof that there are no captive airspaces... at least none that would cause pain.

I did also recieve optic nerve damage to one eye. my main concern is what pressure and nitrogen bubbles can do to my eye and optic nerve. i can understand if you dont want to comment on this but i promise any info or thoughts would be takin as a great help and checked out by a real Doc if need be. Mike

I have a question for you: Did you get this checked out by a DOC BEFORE you started diving???

It seems that its a little late now, if you didnt...

GotAir, I agree with RichLockyer, provided that all things are healed you should be okay. Question, did your eye become damaged physically? Or did you only suffer neurological damage to the functioning of the eye and nerve? If it was physical damage and is healed then the presence of scare tissue whether internal of external has not been shown to increase the risk or susceptible to DCS or DCI, IIRC. As far as neurological damage I could not say. The only thing I can think of is perhaps if the neurological damage was significant enough it could make you more susceptible to getting Narced at depth. If you recently dove to 115' and experienced no significant effects then you probably okay. The problem is that decompression theory is just that, theory, more of an art than a science. I am interested to hear from one of the Docs. I am no doctor.

No I didnt get it checked out before diving. i've pretty much lived my life as nothing ever happened to me except the fact that i'm legaly blind in one eye. the plate and the eye kept me out of sports and the military witch was a drag but other than that a quite normal life. this subject only came up last weekend as i was having Idle chit chat with a buddy. but I'm not a gambler either so if somebody say's they know of somebody that had a problem with this I would take it to heart and do some research and see a doc. I wonder if this part of the question should be referred to Dr.Decompression...?
