We went and got our cert.dives. My husband and I tossed our cookies on the first boat trip, and me on the second one too. :l: I had the patch behind my ear, but didnt do a thing. So, we were told to try TripTone, which worked for my husband but not me. I was so queazy on the last dive that we aborted it about 6 min. into it. I just didnt feel good about going under. I hate that I spoiled our last dive for my hubby. Five other people got sick on the first boat trip also. All in all we did have a good time and saw some beautiful fish, eels, and jellies. Although the visability was sucky, only about 2 feet on the shore dive, and about 20 to 30 on the boat dives. Maybe now we can go somewhere really tropical to dive. Tina

Sorry to hear that your first OW dives weren't that pleasant. Boat diving is not for everyone but the good news is that Cozumel is usually glass flat and like a lake. I don't know anyone that has got sick from a boat ride in Coz. I had a friend that was going to give up diving because of seasickness until he went to Cozumel.

Thats nice to hear, because I was thinking that too. Or that I would be able to shore dive only. We were thinking about Cozumel as a good first dive vacation. Tina

Good to abort when you don't feel good about going into it...

Once you're more comfortable, and if you're diving in a place that's an option, if you're getting really sick on the boat, sometimes the best thing you can do is find a place where you won't damage coral or anything and just go sit on the bottom. Particularly if it's not really surgey, the combination of it being cooler (my face gets flushed when I'm sick) and most important MOTIONLESS can make you feel like a million bucks, even if you have to sit down there for twenty minutes.

Again, if it's an uncomfortable thought, don't do it, but nothing can keep me on the boat when I get to a certain stage of seasickness. Almost killed my instructor during my AOW ("You sure you feel well enough to do the second dive?" "Dude, I love you, you know I do, but if you get between me and getting off this boat, I'm not responsible for the consequences.")

I know the feeling. I am always the first off the boat due to my nausea. I fed the fish on my last boat dive of the weekend in the Keys on Memorial Day. First time I couldn't get suited up in time and just had to make a dash for the edge. As for Cozumel, I agree 100%. I did 16 dives over 4 days there at the beginning of May. I wasn't sick once. I was taking Bonine, which may help you. You can always give it a try. Another trick (apparently) is to have some fruit and it will help settle your stomach.

Good luck and have great time!!!

I don't normally get seasick, but I have. Since your prone to it always take your dramamine (or whatever) ahead of time so it kicks in by the time you are on the boat. Also, bring extra on the boat.

Besides that, visualize and go through the procedures for puking through your regulator as a precaution. I am serious. I felt very sick in Key Largo, but determined to see Christ In The Abyss. I talked over what I would do with the boat captain and my buddy. During that dive, I puked hard for the first time in my reg.

I didn't have to abort, I felt much better after puking, we saw lots of fish, and we had a great laugh.

Don't necessarily expect Cozumel to be flat water. Mother nature is inpredictable, and I have been in some chop in Coz. It may be better on how to handle it than book trips around rocky boats.

I did feel better in the water on the first dive. The second one wasnt so easy. I will ask around about alternatives, I had TripTone and Scopolamine. Maybe the Scop dose can be upped. It was only 1.5 mg. I dont plan on giving up....very stubborn. I love seeing under and being under. I cant imagine throwing up in the regulator, or how to handle it!!! Tina

i get sea sick all the time (well, most of the time), but i can usually get by
ok after barfing a few times by doing the following:

1. the night before the dive, take bonine or dramamine

2. the morning of the dive, take bonine or dramamine

3. at least an hour before any afternoon dive, take bonine or dramamine

i have found that even when i get seasick, if i have done done above, i can
barf, feel better, and get back in the water. most of the time. if the seas
are high (say more than 4-6 feet), i'm done for.

Well if it ever happens consider this before hand:
1-don't panic
2-let your buddy know something interesting is about to happen
3-hold the reg in your mouth so you don't spit it out
4-let it all go, it will all shoot out your purge
5-stay aware of your depth & air (your buddy would be doing the same)
6-take reg out of your mouth, rinse/clean it real quick
7-continue or end your dive

Oh man...I remember when I got certified....4 foot swells, the boat got rocked all over the place...I think I was the only one that DIDN'T hurl all over the place....

Giant strides? Yeah right...I was about like a penguin trying to fly!
