I heard on the radio last night and today about this recent study National Geographic did. The results do not surprise just based on my own observations with traveling around the country.

IMHO there has been a total breakdown in our school system which has assisted in the decline of education. I feel the majority of fault lies in the hands of parents though. Most do not spend enough time with their children - keeping in touch with what is going on in their lives both educational wise as well as socially, and when it comes to discipline, yeehaaa. No more task master discipline, no sirree, it's QUIET TIME, go to the corner and think what you did. :boom:

When I was growing up we were drilled on history, geography, grammar, spelling, math and reading. What has happened? What is being taught in the classrooms nowadays? And when my kids were of school age, they didn't go out to play until school work was done, period!! After dinner they were allowed some time to watch TV or listen to music. However, we also made sure they watched a little quality TV (i.e. Discovery Channel, History Channel, PBS and things along that line).

Here is the article out of USA Today. The results are shameful, and I might also add it is not just in the USA.

I think its sad, but like you said, not surprising. Our education system is lacking. My girlfriend is starting her elementary school teaching career next year, so I hope she can help. On a side note, I took the sample survey, and the results.......20 out of 20.

Not to start a flame war or anything, as I know this may be a sensitive subject for some. The National Geographic survey lists Christianity as the most common religion in the world My impression was that traditionally it was not Christianity, but rather Buddhism; simply due to the overwhelming population numbers in the orient. Does anyone know if NG's answer is based on a more recent census? Any kind of census at all? I'd be curious to find out.

P.S. No problems with the other 19, BTW :)

Speaking as a high school student, I agree that parents should be more involved, but it is up to the kid as well. Many parents make excuses not to help there children. Parents need to be involved with everything that thier child does. If given the chance most kids wont do there home work or anything else that they are supposed to. Just my 2 cents

 Maybe I fall into the stupid category too, but where is the sample survey?

not all students are bad at geography:wink:, I just took that quiz and got a 19/20. Has anyone else done it??

I just took it and got 20/20 but I'll admit I had a couple lucky guesses.

All I can say is "Oh my word"
