String:
I'd suggest AVOIDING boat diver, marine life ID and the like.
Thats a good one, I wonder how many scuba divers out here dove from a boat even though they never did the specialty? ;) I would not want to dive from a boat unless I was certified in it, hehehe

GulfDiver77:
I am taking Nitrox with my AOW as a package deal.
Smart move, that is what I did and saved some bucks. Deep, Night and Navigation will likely be required as part of the course, if you take Nitrox, that may count as a 4th which will leave you one specialty area. Take what you like, it really doesnt matter. Naturalist, PPB, Wreck, you cover it so quickly that what you really want will have to be taken separately again anyway.
Good Luck

Debay777:
I spoke with our instructors about why we didnt do the Peak Buoyancy and they offered to help me out on the side if I wanted it. always ASK ASK ASK!!

I'm with Debay777 here, if you don't ask you never know what your instructor may offer you.
We worked on PPB at the beginning of every dive we took during AOW, and for and extra $60 we got EANx certified as well. Just 'cause we asked.

Thanks for the suggestions. My LDS said he'd throw Nitrox in for free. I think that is very generous. All of my equipment I have bought from him and I am going to continue to use him as my LDS.

I'm not current with what dives are required, but I recommend deep and night dives as they prepare you to be a better and more experienced diver. I also did search & recovery. As for wreck or peak buoyancy, you can sign up for them later as a single course. I also highly recommend the rescue course.
Dive safely.

I'm in the middle of the AOW right now. Last week we did a Nav dive, and a night dive. (Lots of fun, and a bit freaky) Both were walk in dives. This weekend it's a deep dive, a boat dive, and a wreck dive. Everyone in the class including the instructor is a bit pressed for time (We all live and work on a defense contract on a small island), so the choices were a bit limited. If I was able ...I'd do the PPb instead of the boat dive, but here localy the boat dive helps us get a boating cert also.

Some of the people that have posted seem to be PADI salemen, quite amusing :>.
Anyways here are the specialties.

Deep (mandatory) - Learn that you can get narced under 20metres(some), and that you breathe faster at depth. This is more a 'lets feel what its like to be deeper' dive and not much else.
Navigation (mandatory) - Although you can learn these skills alone, it's a pretty useful thing to be giving a helping hand here, and i believe its a worthwhile dive.

Altitude - Learn to read a table, you already have, seems pointless (never done it)
Fish identification - learn to recognise fish and apparently count them? reading a fish id guide seems as useful as this course can be
Boat - learn that you need SPECIAL skills to jump off a boat..?? WHAT???
Dpvd - dont know, youd probably have to pay to hire one, need good buotancy, could be really good fun.
Drift - learn that currents exist? well thats all the book seems to say,
Dry suit diver - depending on where you live, you might do all the dives in a dry suit, this might be mandatory, i don't think its a bad thing to do it, but it wont teach you much.
EANx - useful, but cannot be used as one of the five dives, but can be done on top.
Multi-level - Doesn't seem to tell you anything, you need to own a wheel, and most people could use a computer w/o a class.
Night - introduces you to a new enviroment. Could be useful, will probably be a nice dive, if you've never done one.
PPB - depends on you current skills, trim should be included. not personally done it but the book does hint if taught properly, it would be a good dive.
Naturalist - i don't actually understand how this could be a dive. :>
Photographer/Videographer - might be useful if you use them, hardly think they are essential
Wreck - It sounds like a really good specialty, but i would say it's one of the ones you really dont need to make, its basically just a pleasure dive, with a wreck :>.
Search+Recover - dive which involves new skills, although i've never done it, it seems a useful one.

so erm

Deep, Navigation (needed)
Dry suit(if needed if being used) ,
Search and recovery , PPB(if you think you need) , Night
EANx (if offered as an extra)

I would recommend Navigation, Deep, and PPB. Wreck is good if you have an interest in that.

Yeah I went on my first boat dive last Saturday . And it was all common sense stuff,I can't believe they offer a class for something so simple.

Deep and Nav are required, for the electives I usually reccomend PPB, Wreck and Search&Recovery
