Human physiology is not my thing so could somebody please explain how hydration effects your ability to stay warm? Big words are ok, I am a scientist :wink:

Lately I have noticed several references on the board to level of hydration effecting ability to stay warm when diving and I just wasn't getting the connection.
 
Well I'm not necessarily fond of big words where simple words suffice...

AFAIK, if your body doesn't have ample supplies of fuel (glucose and water) available, it's pretty aggressive about portioning and conserving what it does have.

In my experience, when working in a cold environment, taking a break to eat a Snickers and drink water does a great job of helping the ol internal furnace.

Very well and neatly said. Glycolysis is the 1st important step in metabolism. Water is an absolute must. Sugar is as well.

Ok that makes sense I guess. I'm often cold and I'm also often somewhat dehydrated. I have a lot of trouble drinking the recommended amount of water even if I space it out over the day. It has to be extraordinarily hot and humid for me to even feel thirsty and want to drink that much water. I just can't do it because I feel like a water balloon about to burst and because it seems like I have to run to the loo every 15 minutes if I even attempt to drink the appropriate amount of water. I don't drink caffeinated beverages so that helps a bit but I really cannot handle large quantities of fluid. Tips on combatting this?
 
Try the new 'flavored' waters that have a bit of artificial sweetener in them, like Fruit2O. I've found that people who dislike water will be more than happy to down that stuff like there's no tomorrow.

Also try putting small amounts of Gatorade mix into water. Don't use the amount they recommend, that's way too much to hydrate you well. Use half or less.
 
Yeah I've tried those, I still can't manage to drink what I'm supposed to without feeling like I'm about to burst.
