Anyone here used a high pressure hose Quick Disconnect?

I'm putting together a new gear package (my first - and hopefully my second, too). This gear will be for travel, warm water recreational diving only. Nothing extreme, technical, etc.

Assembling my list, I've come across this small piece that sounds like it could be a nice convenience. I want to make sure it wouldn't be a problem-prone headache though.

Aeris sells an HP quick disconnect fitting. Looks like it goes between the reg first stage and your console/computer hose. 40 bucks.

I see some potential benefit in having this: I do all my dives after a long sequence of flights (on smaller and smaller planes at the end). Getting my gear packed down small is pretty important. I'm thinking that having a quick-disconnect on that hose (in my case it would be for a small console; the computer is on the wrist) would make everything a little easier to pack (with one less hose attached to the reg).

Note: I am (and will be) using standard hoses, not Miflex. Yes, I know that Miflex is better and more flexible, thanks, but a switch to Miflex is not happening right now. Also, I'm not interested in a BP/W setup, thanks (since every thread seems to devolve into a discussion of that).

Questions: anybody here have a quick disconnect on their console/computer hose? Had any problems with it? Gald you have it? Useful little piece of hardware, or is this just adding a fragile, failure-prone potential problem?

The one I'm looking at is from Aeis ("Aeris High Pressure Hose Quick Disconnect") but would be open to other brands.

Thanks for any advice on this topic.

Get a BP/W and some Miflex hoses...

Just kidding. Well, partly anyway

What about ditching the console for an SPG aand wrist-mount compass (or whatever else it is you have on your console apart from the pressure gauge)?

I don't see much benefit to a QD fitting, since you can accomplish the objective (easier packing) with a spanner in <2 minutes without adding a potentil failure point

I have used hundreds of HP QDs industrially and they are reasonably reliable as long as you keep O-rings clean. It might help to understand why you want one. Removing the SPG from the gaggle of hoses off the first stage usually doesn’t help tame the beast much. Most people want to hand-carry all their high-priced/delicate components when flying to a dive vacation so keep the regulator together anyway. I am just thinking there may be a better solution.

You can remove the SPG and see if packing improves that much.

I had a Scubapro HP QD on a Scubapro EDI. The EDI was very sensitive to heat and humidity, so it had to go be cleaned in FW and dried to get them to shut down in the humid tropics. I retired the QD when I retired the computer. It is an unnecessary failure point that also needs to be cleaned well. BTW, the Scubapro model did not seal when detached so had to be attached or very careful when soaking.

I pack my regs (3 sets) in a gutted brief case for travel. I detach the HP hoses at the first stages so they lay pretty flat. Takes just a couple minutes with an adjustable wrench or a scuba multi-tool.

Do you then put the (manufacturer supplied) plugs into the holes in the first stage for the trip? Or do you figure that since the regs are in a clean briefcase that they will be okay without them?

I'm sorry if this is obvious - I just got my first set of regs and when taking out the port plugs and putting in the hoses, I figured I had to practically be in an operating room

I know your questions was directed at awap, but just as general advice:

I don't like to leave ports open on a first stage unless I'm actually working on it. You just don't know what kind of mischief it will get into when you leave the room ....

I use a ziplock bag if I've removed all of the hoses, or a piece of electrical tape... a port plug is best for long term storage I think, but for travel either a ziplog bag or tape should be fine.... assuming it is also protected inside luggage, not in a burlap bag slung across a camel's back in a sandstorm....

I'm probably paranoid and way too anal, but it can't hurt to treat the inside of your 1st stage like an operating room...

Best wishes.

Here's a HP quick disconnect that I have used personally and outfitted others with nothing but positive results:

Hope this helps!

At first I capped the openings (port plug and hose end cap), but I don't bother any more. The holes are quite small.

I also store my 2nds with the purge depressed.

Can you tell me more about this part? I know that while the regs are soaking (if not pressurized - I don't own a tank) one has to be careful not to press the purge. But I didn't realize that the opposite would be beneficial while they were in storage. What do you do to make them stay "pressed"?

(I would like to learn more about how my regs work, so I could decide these things for myself; but for now I would still like to know how best to store them.)

I have a Zeagle Flathead VI with ZX and Envoy second stages, if that makes any difference.

Thank you

Had a bit of debris fall into an ambient port of a Scubapro mk10 which are quite smaller one day and it led after rolling around to the piston jamming open so I bother protecting my holes.

I was on a camel in a sandstorm with a burlap bag slung over my back and my sandwiches became inedible.
