Chainsaw. Depending on how things go in the next couple of weeks it could be that time of year when neither are recommended. Usually the mountain lakes don't open up to any sort of diving from mid-March till early May..
 
Hard....and the visibility is still crappy. Under the ice last weekend it was still pretty "milky", a far cry from our usual 40-50 feet visibility under the ice.

I really hope we are not in for a repeat of last year's conditions.

Waterton is open though.

I can't remember- Does Waterton ever completely freeze over?
 
I don't know about the dead of winter, but Cameron Bay is open now. We've had folks out diving there.
