Well it looks like the wife and I will be relocating to Austin this Spring. Looking forward to running into some of you at the local dive spots. Anybody recommend a good LDS that might need some part-time help? I noticed in some other threads that there are a few more stores doing trimix. Hows the tech diving scene down there?

Congradulations on your pending move to Austin. Local dive spots include Lake Travis, Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Canyon Lake and the Comal river.

The main LDSs are Oak Hill Scuba (mine), Scubaland Adventures, Toms Dive and Swim and Dive World. We are all PADI shops. Oak HIll Scuba is also a NAUI shop. Toms is SSI. There is also Clearwater Divers, Deep Blue and Austin Aquasports. Deep Blue is currently closed as the owner was injured in an accident. Aquasports is closed for relocation / remodel depending on which sign you read.

Oak Hill Scuba and Dive World are the ones offering trimix. The shop you choose may depend on what part of town you end up in. Oak Hill Scuba and Scubland south are in southwest Austin. Scubaland also has a north location. Toms is north central and Dive World is far northwest. That is not to say that I don't get customers from Round Rock, or that folks in the south don't drive up north to get what they want. Each shop has its own flavor, so check us out when you get a chance.

Wow! That was quick. I thought by your last post that ya'll were just thinking about the move. I think you'll like it here...Austin is a cool city.

There are plenty of dive shops here. Mack pretty much covered them all. Most of them cater to the recreational divers, but there are a good handful of tech divers. Most technical diving happens out at Lake Travis (deep, extended range), cave diving is pretty much non-existent, wreck diving is all out in the gulf...unless you consider a sailboat at the bottom of Lake Travis a wreck dive. :)

Austin Aquasports was the tech shop in the area, but some of us are questioning whether or not it will reopen. Dive World, Oak Hill Scuba, and Scubaland have already started taking up the slack though by providing helium and picking up some of the tech gear manufacturers like OMS, Dive Rite, and Halcyon. There are tech classes available too through a couple of the shops as well as independent tech instructors.

Keep in touch via this forum and you won't have any trouble finding someone to dive with.

Well said gentlemen, well said... :happyjaz: Greetings and salutations to The Chad

Austin has changed alot since the mid 70's when I attended police training there...but it is still a great place to live and work from all reports and my own observations several times each year. Lake Travis is a favorite dive spot located near Round Rock outside Austin. I know of several good shops and have the pleasure to be friends with a few divers in Austin...I think you both will enjoy the community. Best wishes.

I called Austin Aquasports on Friday....the person on the line said that were in the middle of renovation and would not be opened for business until around Mar...I told him I had Scubapro regs I needed servicing....he said that possibly he could do them in Feb....not so sure I may be looking for another shop to take them to.....any recomendations.....Mack you need to start carrying the scubapro line....:D

The Chad welcome to the swamp:wink:

I'd like to carry Scubapro, but they require a pretty strong commitment. I may talk to them about it however, it would probably mean getting rid of one of my other lines:Oceanic, Mares, TUSA, Zeagle, Apex, Aqualung, OMS, DiveRite, .....

PM me and I can hook you up to get your regs serviced.

LVX, It depends on who you talk to from AquaSports. I think Mike is intending to move and Glenn is intending to stay. It will be interesting to see if either of them can make that happen.

Yeah, that is what I had heard. I heard Glen owns the name so Mike would have to get a new name. I also heard Glen was moving out of Austin, but don't really know if that is true or not...

Anyway, waiting till March could have a serious affect on Mike's business...
