I just got certified in December and one of the first things I did was check on the internet for local dive clubs. I was very disappointed not to find any. I've even asked at a couple local dive shops.

I know there's a very active ski club that meets regularly, plans trips, etc. I thought there would be something similar with diving. No such luck.

I'm a very enthused 59 year old and have taken a couple dive trips since my certification. I'd like to be meeting similar local folks to talk diving with, and maybe even to travel with.

Having said that, I'm not interested in local (cold) diving, so I'm not looking to hook up with those hearty divers who dive locally.

Maybe I'm missing something...is there a local dive club?

Thx.

Ron,
I don't know which shops you have been to, but try Scuba Hut in Glen Burnie. I know that they put together trips periodically, and go to some of the PA quarries for practice. You might also want to try the Maryland Aquanauts . They get together once a month for meetings and arrange dives.
There is a shop in Timonium, (Aqua Ventures) that you might want to check out.
If you don't mind travelling to Baltimore, Divers Den is a nice shop.
If you do contact these shops, tell them Charlie Kline said Aloha.
Hope this helps

Ron,
I'm not sure there are any dive clubs in Howard County, but I would recommend http://olneyscubaadventure.pages.web.com/ in Montgomery County. I am a member of the club and we are a very diverse group, some members like local diving while others are exclusively warm water divers. We take a couple trips to the carribean every year, last year was cozumel and and livaboard to Saba/St. Kitts. We also take multiple trips to NC where the water is warm (around 72 degrees). The club is not affiliated with any dive shop.

You could also try the Brass Anchor Brass Anchor Scuba Center Frederick PADI Courses They are an excellent shop in Frederick and also have a club associated with them. They run trips all over.

Andrew,

Both those options seem to be what I'm looking for (although not a nearby as I'd like).

Thanks.

I'm gonna try to come to the Olney meeting this Thursday. (I checked their website and didn't see any warm trips planned, but maybe I'll learn more on Thursday.) (If you go, keep an eye out for the new guy: 59, beard & glasses, graying hair.)

Thx.

Thanks for the info though. I have also passed it to a friend in Ellicott City who is trying to work up the courage to dive.
