i have just started learning diving but havent gone into the sea yet. people have been telling me not to use sunblock on face because it will be sticky and inconvinient when i put on my mask.
any idea how i can protect my face using spf without having such mess putting on my mask?
thx!

get yourself a hat :) or two or three.

shade is my friend, my fair skin is has two colors - white and pink. no such thing as tan here.

seriously tho, hats work great diving by shore or boat and let you skip the eye stinging.

yes do get a hat, get a wide brimmed hat with a string (so the wind won't blow it away on a boat)

using sunblock before a dive may be a problem underwater when water gets into your mask it may splash into your eyes and that would really be nasty!!!!!!

I use a hooded shirt and a wide brimmed hat (this covers two or three hats). to protect my head and ears from the sun. and bring cheap sunglasses on board boat dives.

You can always apply the suncream and let it soak in, then you dont have anything that can run into your eyes during the dive, we apply over an hour before going out, havent had a problem during diving or many years of other watersports. I also use a hat for most outdoor sports, my neck is partial to burning when i am not looking.

I always put mine on in the morning before I leave to go diving. The sunscreen has time to soak into my skin and I've never had it rinse off into my mask. I also wear a wide brimmed hat with a string. Don't forget your lips, get a lip sunscreen such as Chap-stick or some of the others. I prefer the flavored ones they make for the kiddies. Use the lip sunscreen liberally, nothing worse than numb, sunburned lips!

I don't like to be dependant on others, so I found a sunscreen that I can apply myself to the regions that are a bit harder to reach. I have Coppertone Sport sunblock, that comes in a spray pump. I can blast it over my shoulder onto my back myself without a problem, and it also dries quickly and doesn't seem to be as goopy as regular sunblock [it's waterproof too (sorta ;)].

I've never had issue with my mask or it running in to my eyes.

I use a lotion that has an SPF in it. I use it everday under my make-up. I can't tell if you're a male or a female but I found a few in the skin care area at Wal-mart. It's really thin and soaks in right away. I apply it an hour or so before I dive (when I remember to use it) and I haven't had a problem with sweating or feeling greasy. I can definitely tell when I use it and when I don't. If you want to know the name PM me and I'll check when I get home and let you know. I think it's by Suave and it's rather inexpensive.

Remember all that stuff you slather on is coming off in the water. (Don't care how 'waterproof' the claim is.) If it stings your eye, imagine what it's doing to all the sealife that is sucking it into gills, etc. Some enclosed areas actually have a 'no sunscreen' policy. One of the lagoons near Akumal comes to mind.

I'm as concerned about that as I am the fact that fish urinate.

Like Spectre, I use the spray on stuff too.. I find that not only can it protect me from harmful rays in hard to reach areas, but I can also bring it down a couple ATMs and use it as a type of mace for marine life that won't sit still while I photograph it.
