I've just got myself an Apeks reg and found that their mouthpieces are pretty hard on my gums (I have several gum ulcers after several dives) though I have no problems with jaw fatigue, etc and quite like the mouthpiece except the ulcers. Anyone has any advice to soften the mouthpiece (other than diving many times with it)? Thanks!

Get you a new mouthpiece, the best on out there is the "SEA-CURE MOUTHPIECE" you put it in hot water and it molds to fit your mouth and your bite pattern much like a mouthprotector for football or boxing.

Well we use a hammer on abalone and it works well as long as you don't get too agressive and splatter them all over the kitchen cabinets, ceiling, walls and floor...

But seriously....

You can buy soft mouthpieces...
And they will give you a very tenuous grip on the regulator...

You can continue with the hard mouth piece and use ora-gel post dive to heal the ulcers...

or
You can get (as has a been suggested) a Seacure mouthpiece...
But if you do be aware of several things:
1) You might have to trim the overly long ends or it will gag you.
2) Your buddy might not like it for air sharing drills... (however he/she will be happy to have it in a real OOA emergency.)
3) Jaw fatigue and torn mouth pieces will be a thing of the past.

Hey, try taking the critter outta the shell first, makes it a lot less messy. :out:

About that gum thing; there may be a possibility you're having an allergic reaction. I used to get the same thing with the cheapo rubber snorkel mouthpieces.
I don't know what material Apeks uses on theirs, but I suspect the Seacures may be straight silicone, which should be very non-reactive.
Let us know how things work out, eh?

I use Comfo-bite™ mouthpieces. Very soft and easily conforms to your mouth shape. There is a curved piece that fits behind your front teeth and helps hold it in your mouth, making it unneccesary to clinch it with your teeth.

I tried the Sea Cure™ and although it was formed to my dentition and trimmed short, it was hard. A waste of $30 for me!

Are the Comfo-bite™ mouthpieces available in different materials? The one supplied with my Aqualung reg is very... um, firm. I like the shape, but I wish it were softer. I reckon I could run over it with a truck (the mouthpiece, not the entire reg!) without doing any damage.

The black ones that come with Aqualung regs are a bit firmer than the clear silicone ones. But don't ask me what they are made of!

Seacure! I swear by it. They're spendy, but likely to be the last mouthpiece you'll ever need.

I used to go through a mouthpiece a month (I dive commercially) or more. I got a Seacure and haven't replaced it in three years. My son just got certified last summer and I got one for him. He's only 11, so his teeth are constantly changing. No problem: just dip it in hot water and reform it.

Seacure! http://www.seacure1.com/ (No, I'm not a rep.)

Stay wet:
