Hey All,

Whats the best way to locate and have a diving doctor set as your Primary Care Physician? I emailed DAN a year ago and they came back with two doctors in my area - neither of which is in a general practice, or listed as an option under my insurance. I've gotten into this sport, err lifestyle, head long and want to find a doc that meets my needs.. :) I checked out my insurance's physician directory - nothing along the lines of hyperbaric, diving, etc sticking out... Any suggestions?

Find out some of the group practices that your insurance company works with (for instance, my primary is with Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group) and give them a call asking for someone that works with scuba divers and/or hyperbaric medicine.

Try one of the physician referral services and see if they can help locate someone that contracts with your insurance company.

I think that is the future of diving medicine as most diver problems are not DCI related.

www.dive-med.org

Alas, you are in Chicago. DAN usually has more person's avaialable but give out 2 names at a time. You can also check scuba-doc.com and the uhms.org to get names... note most are specialists not primary care.

Wanted to bump this as I found a detailed resource list of diving doctors....

http://www.scuba-doc.com/ and down under the "quick link box" click on Diving Medical Examiners... There's docs listed worldwide....

Lacking a specialist I've found that a physician certified to perform aviation flight physicals is a good choice, especially if the patient base includes commercial pilots. The mind set and basic baro understanding is very similar. So, it is a very short jump to understanding diving requirements.

If the doc has a military flight medicine background, even better.

That's the link I was just getting ready to post....It's what I use when I fill out an EAP for a place I've never been to before
