Work with me Jeff. Of course my point was (is) that he should have a better understanding of what DIR is after the course :)
What? I can't lean this on the internet? I have to take a course? Whats the world coming to.

you can lean on me :)

Where is that "PADI Specialty: Internet DIR Diver" card when you need it?

hey did onfloat post this thread?

okay...so I will answer FOR him.

in quotes: I put non DIR divers on "my program"

I let them know what the irreducible minimums are.

No solo, have a sound gas plan, etc.

They usually like diving with me so much, they say "okay, Tom, you win"

...end of quotes. Actually, I made that up...but that's how it works. You either want to dive with him or not. No ego-tripping

....wow, a cool DIR diver, they exist

Lamont gets cool status for giving tutorials on theoretical bubble models to strokes

Your post makes it sounds like people go diving with him _despite_ the extra attention and safety implied.

Curious. I find people that I want to dive with see it as an asset.

I overlook it and cut him some slack unless it's a difficult dive, then I want to be his best friend. or at least "in the area"

...at least I am honest. DIR buddies have their place. lol, he probably thinks I have my place since I have a boat.

plus...he is a Marine.

diving with Marines is good. Name only one criteria for a buddy extraordinaire....

"uh, give me a Marine, please." A DIR MARINE?...you have it made in the shade. A really good situation for all involved is if he has a DIR buddy and the solo diver can just be in the area. Everybody is happy, nobody has compromised their morals.

I'm 95% DIR, and though initially I preached I've stopped that. Initially people give me the hairy eyeball when they see my rig in a tropical location, after a couple of dives they tend to come up to me and ask all kinds of questions. I'll explain elaborately and gives lots of examples of why certain things make sense. ("when is the last time you tried your octo at depth"? etc). Combine that with an extensive (but small) save a dive kit and people's interest increases exponentially. All that being said I keep dropping my knees while frogkicking..
I'm not DIR, but after reading this thread and coming across your post, I just had to reply.

I dive a HOG rig. When I was in Thailand I was dubbed Gadget Man for my HOG configuration. Guess they didn't like me taking the time to explain to my buddy who was diving a standard rec rig which reg they get in an OOA or the fact that I always have 2 lights on my harness, wrist compass, wrist computer, and SPG. No console, just clean and simple.

Anyway, back to the subject of the thread. I've been diving with DIR divers. My suggestion for those that are DIR, don't judge anyone before you dive with them.

If you see a problem with their setup, point it out and help them understand why it's a problem. Don't just tell them it's a problem.

As the saying goes, don't preach, do.

Congratulations JeffG. You just passed my very rigorous PADI Specialty Course.
