Hi there ..... This may sound like a stupid question but really need to know.
Newly certified diver. In our confined water training we used a weight belt, but in open water (different instructor) we used weight integrated BC. On the boat, she handed us weights to use both days and i noticed there were several colors on weight bags in the bucket. Is there a standard color or way to determine the weight of each bag, ie a 4 lb vs 5 lb?

Don't believe there's an industry standard, but for any given manufacturer they will be different colors by weight for sure - ie it's not just random. Many have a little tag on them with a #. Worse case, ask. Someone on the boat probably knows what's what.

Some use bag color, some use black bags with colored writing or colored bands.

The one I am most familiar with is Sea Pearls. Their code is:
1 lb. – black
2 lb. – gray
3 lb. – burgundy
4 lb. – Navy
5 lb. – black
6 lb. – gray
8 lb. – burgundy
10 lb. – black

SeaSoft uses:
2 lb. – black with yellow writing
3 lb. – black with red writing
4 lb. – black with purple writing
5 lb. – black with blue writing
10 lb. – black with gray writing

XS uses:
1 lb. – black with blue band
2 lb. – black with red band
3 lb. – black with yellow band
4 lb. – black with orange band
5 lb. – black with white band

Marine Sports uses black, blue and red bags and make them in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 lb. sizes, but I don't know which is which.

There are probably others.
And this doesn't even start to address metric.
