It is ok to push a shark with your hand just as long as you don't hit it. :D
 
The notion that you should 'punch a shark on the nose' is out-dated. In fact this only aggitates them without doing any real damage. Grabbing the gills or pointing a finger into the eye socket is far more effective!

Through an admittedly limited experience (I've probably spent circa ten hours in the water with Bulls and Tigers), it's clear that this page is very good and up-to-date on shark theory. Nice point about not jumping in with pods of dolphins... Tiger Sharks prey on injured dolphins so a big splash followed by clumsy swimming isn't going to bode well for you with one of those patrolling!
