I just set up my 40Cf stage and when I went to clip it on I noticed that I have my Ditty bag(smb+) on my right side and it was not so much in the way as inaccessible with the stage clipped on. the reason it was there was that I sometimes take it off and the strap on the right does not have a buckle to remove.

Does nothing besides the light go on the right? should I move the bag to the left behind the buckle or reverse the buckle?
I am pre-tech, I know I will learn all this when I take my class but, I have been diving set up for tech for awhile and I am adding one thing at a time to practice building up the task loading. not doing any stage diving but I want to dive with one and practice hooking and unhooking it and deploying the regulator.

EDIT: seems maybe the Stage goes on the left, so maybe nevermind. DOH!!

I was a little confused about your description, but losing the ditty bag and installing pockets on your exposure suit or getting a pair of X-Shorts would be a good place to start.

The stage gets clipped on the left. I'm not too sure of what this ditty bag you speak of is. If diving without a can light you can use a bellows pocket on the waist strap in it's place on the right side, if not you should put the smb in your left thigh pocket.

ok it does sound like a bellows pocket on the right side of the waist strap

I've never seen anyone dive with both a bellows pocket and can light on the right side of the waist strap. It sounds like you need to get some thigh pockets for your wet/dry suit that can be sewn or glued on. The only thing on the left side of your waist should be your SPG clipped to the left hip D ring and any stage bottles if applicable.

This is not a tech setup, it's a basic hog rig. It's very commonly dove as a recreational configuration.

So to review:

Cannister light on the right side or bellows pocket. This is what your long hose gets hooked under.

Left side hip D-ring with SPG clipped off. Knife on this side of the buckle but more towards the middle.

As this is posted in the DIR forum some good advice would be to find a mentor, take a fundamentals class (preferably both) because it sounds like you are pretty confused about the configuration. You're going to get used to something that isn't correct and then have a more difficult time breaking bad habits. Why are you even bothering attempting to dive with a stage? That isn't something you cover until Tech 1. You have to crawl before you walk and walk before you run. There are plenty of things you should work on and master before worrying about a stage bottle.

Hopefully this answered your question, let me know if I need to elaborate any more.

Sorry about the bad grammar, it's been a hell of a day.

Yes, nothing goes on the right hip except the light canister, or a pocket or knife to hold the long hose if you aren't using a canister light. Stages and deco bottles are all clipped off on the left.

Small things that you might need during a dive are stored in pockets on your exposure protection. That way, they are not entanglement hazards, and they are secure and likely to be available when needed.

Dan Mackay's book, Dress for Success, although not entirely current, is still a very good resource on how to put things together and arrange your rig. Even better is to connect with some DIR divers in your area and get some mentoring. THIS thread might be useful (I'm too lazy to get an atlas out and figure out where you are from your profile info :) ).

Posted this as a private msg then decided to post here:

live in Houston TX. Thanks for your dedication to Scubaboard, when ever there is a long thread on a subject I am interested in I usually just skip ahead to yours or Peters posts on the subject.
for now I am just playing with the setup in the pool etc, to see how it feels and where everything fits.
